Play is one of the most powerful tools in feeding therapy ✨🍓

Using feeding tools like cookie cutters, kid-safe knives, fun spoons and forks, food picks, open cups, and chewy tubes turns mealtime into a sensory-rich learning experience. Through play, children are able to explore textures, smells, colors, and new foods in a low-pressure way that builds confidence and reduces anxiety around eating.

Play-based feeding supports:
• sensory exploration
• oral motor development
• self-feeding skills
• fine motor coordination
• positive food experiences

When children feel safe to explore through play, progress with feeding often follows naturally 💛

Next in our team spotlight is Grisel, a dedicated heart within our ECI program and PdN Autism Identification Team. 🧩

A pillar of the speech therapy community for 15 years, Grisel specializes in Childhood Apraxia of Speech and Autism. Her true gift isn’t just in the sessions—it’s the way she empowers parents with the tools and confidence to be their child’s greatest advocate long after the day is done. ♥️

When she isn’t mentoring at UTEP or serving our community through Rockin’ Tykes, she’s bringing her background in film and music to the room. Grisel proves that even the hardest work can feel like a hit performance when it’s filled with this much heart. 🌟

📚✨At PdN Children’s, storytime turns into skill‑building time. During speech therapy, we use books to support:
🗣️ Vocabulary growth
❓ Wh‑questions
📖 Recalling & retelling stories
👉 Following directions
🧠 Semantic mapping (connecting themes & words)
🎭 Role‑playing & social skills

Because when learning feels like a story, progress comes naturally. 💙

Gestures are a BIG deal when it comes to language development 🧠

Research shows that early gesture use can actually predict language skills later in childhood—for so many of the children we work with.

That’s why we love celebrating milestones like blowing kisses 💋—they’re more than cute… they’re meaningful communication.

Because every wave, point, and kiss is a step toward communication 💛

Speech therapy… but make it REAL LIFE 🥹🍕

This month’s pizza party unit (inspired by Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party!) was all about building language through play: sequencing, requesting, describing, and making choices.

But the best part? ✨
When it doesn’t stop here.

Skills practiced in therapy → brought to life at home 💛

We love when parents help carry over skills into everyday moments, where the magic really happens 🫶

Not all screen time is created equal! 📺✨

Ever notice your toddler becoming extra restless or having a “meltdown” right after watching certain high-energy cartoons? You’re not alone! Many popular shows are designed with fast cuts and bright flashing lights that can overstimulate a developing nervous system. 🧠

For our ECI (Early Childhood Intervention) families, we recommend “Low-Stimulation” or Sensory-Friendly shows. These gems use:
✅ Gentle Pacing to give little brains time to process language.
✅ Muted Palettes to prevent visual fatigue.
✅ Social Modeling that teaches empathy and problem-solving.

Swipe through to see our top 5 picks for ages 1-3! ➡️

1️⃣ Puffin Rock – Perfect for nature lovers and quiet mornings.
2️⃣ Trash Truck – Best for teaching gentle friendships.
3️⃣ Tumble Leaf – Our favorite for “learning through play” and science.
4️⃣ Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood – The gold standard for big feelings!
5️⃣ Stillwater – A beautiful introduction to mindfulness and calm.

ECI Tip: The best way to use these shows is “Co-Viewing.” Sit with your little one, talk about what the characters are doing, and relate it back to your day! 🫶🏼

Which of these is already a favorite in your house? Or do you have another low-stim go-to? Let us know in the comments! 👇

This is who we do it for. 🤍

The little versions of us who needed patience.

Who needed understanding.

Who needed someone to slow down and truly see them.

As we end a busy month and begin the month of April, we’re looking ahead to Día de los Niños—a day dedicated to celebrating the joy, dignity, and individuality of every child. ✨

All month long, we honor the children we serve—not just for who they are becoming, but for who they already are.

Every voice matters. Every child belongs. 🤍
