This is Luci! Luci’s diagnosis has made expressive communication difficult, as well as on-task behavior, and paying attention/sustaining attention to one activity at hand. When her favorite music is being performed though, that’s a different story. Luci is highly motivated by live and recorded music and often sings full phrases of her favorite songs for a good 3-4 min duration, where she normally shows difficulty expressing more than 3-4 words. Here we’re using live music recreation in our music therapy studio, paired with live instruments as well as recordings she’s familiar with and amplification to increase the sensory feedback. Luci’s well on her way to making verbal choices for song choice as well as expressing herself creatively, which we hope will translate to her life outside of music therapy with time 🎤 🎵

S was admitted to the hospital due to severe anxiety and panic attacks. Once a teacher who loved singing and playing instruments with her students, she grew overwhelmed by music as her mental health declined. Even the thought of music triggered distress.⁠

Thanks to the music therapy program at the McNair Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at Kelowna General Hospital with support of Music Heals funding, S received one-on-one music therapy sessions, as group settings weren’t suitable for her at the time. The music therapist focused on building trust and creating a safe space, combining music with mindfulness to support S’s well-being.⁠

Music Therapy began gently, with vocal humming and mindfulness. As her tolerance grew, the Kalimba was introduced. At first hesitant, S eventually played it, smiling as she did, reclaiming a long-lost part of herself.⁠

Using her voice and the Kalimba became a healing bridge back for S and her relationship with music. Before discharge, S expressed heartfelt gratitude for the chance to reconnect with something that once brought her joy. Thanks to music therapy, she found a safe, meaningful path back to music.⁠
