It was a hard lesson to learn, but I don’t run on empty anymore. This past week included time off, celebrating a friend, and sunshine and salty air.

Rest isn’t separate from the work. It’s how I remain grounded and able to be fully present to keep doing the work.

Cooking in my camper because staying nourished as a student midwife is a form of self-care.

This season asks for long days, full attention, and steady presence. Making real food in a small space is one of the ways I intentionally take care of myself and stay grounded in my body.

Always simple. Nothing fancy. It's just part of how I care for myself while learning how to care for others.

This week I closed out my time at Maternidad La Luz. I came with the intention of learning what maternity care looks like in a bilingual, bicultural, community-rooted setting on the border. The lessons I’m walking away with will carry me into my next apprenticeship and into my practice.

I am immensely grateful to the families who allowed me into their birthing journey and to the students and midwives who made space for learning and welcomed me into their work.

Apprenticeships have begun!

I’m about halfway through my time in El Paso for the first phase of my midwifery apprenticeship at Maternidad La Luz.

Being here has been everything I wanted and more. Learning from the moment I walked through the doors. It’s exactly why I chose to come and even more than I could have imagined.

This week also marked a return to work and to my studies, so balancing all of the things has very much been the name of the game. Holding work, learning, and life at the same time and trusting this season in carrying all three.

And of course, allowing the space to explore El Paso.

Grateful for the opportunity to stretch and grow in this way.

Practical. Pink. Full of possibility. 🩷

During my doula training, a cross-country move meant I learned in a wide range of settings — hospitals, homes, and birth centers with doctors, midwives, and family physicians. I didn’t set out to learn that way. It’s simply how my path unfolded. I lean into the unexpected paths and ways I’ve been shaped more than the paths I am “supposed to” follow.

The learning across different places and spaces, alongside different care providers and communities, shaped how I understand birthwork. It became foundational. Those experiences didn’t just inform my training, they shaped my values and the kind of care I’m committed to ensuring every family receives both in policy and in practice.

As I move through midwifery training, I want my learning to reflect that same depth but this time by choice and with intention. I want it to be shaped through a wide range of communities and perspectives of different providers, rather than formed in a single setting.

Supporting that kind of learning takes real-life planning and a whole lot of support! Enter - the Pink Unicorn’s Bump! My Jeep (otherwise known as my Pink Unicorn) and my travel camper (Bump). It’s practical. It’s full of joy. And it’s also part of how I’m building a learning path that makes it possible to travel during my clinicals in a wide range of community settings.

I’m aware that being able to approach training this way reflects real privilege. I don’t take that lightly. This flexibility and mobility carry responsibility to listen carefully, to move with humility, and to remain accountable to the communities I’m learning alongside.

That’s the balance I’m holding as I continue with intention and joy.

I didn’t realize how much school was offsetting the weight of the news until I slowed things down for the holidays.

So I’m picking it back up… just slowing it waaay down.

Grateful to have represented MomsRising.org at the Congressional Briefing focused on the CDC Safe Motherhood programs. These federal programs shine a light on maternal deaths and complications, guide states in improving care, and help save moms and babies who might otherwise be missed. These programs were zeroed out under the current Administration’s budget and we’ve been fighting hard ever since to make sure that doesn’t happen. Moms and babies deserve better.
