Before starting ABA therapy, most providers require a formal diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from a qualified medical professional. This diagnosis helps ensure that the child receives the most appropriate, individualized support and also allows services to be covered by many insurance providers.

Once a diagnosis is obtained, ABA clinicians can conduct a comprehensive assessment to understand the child’s strengths, needs, and goals. From there, a personalized treatment plan is created to help build meaningful skills such as communication, social interaction, independence, and emotional regulation.

Early identification and diagnosis can open the door to valuable support that helps children with autism thrive. 💙

ABA therapy focuses on teaching practical, meaningful skills that help children with autism become more independent and successful in everyday life. Every small step is a step in the right direction! 💙

Here are 5 sensory-friendly activities you can do at home that support behavior regulation and social engagement for children with autism:

1. Sensory Bins 🗄️
Fill a bin with items like rice, beans, kinetic sand, or water beads. Add small toys or scoops for your child to explore. Sensory bins provide calming tactile input and encourage shared play as parents can take turns scooping, hiding, or finding objects together.

2. Obstacle Courses 🧗‍♂️
Create a simple indoor obstacle course using pillows, tunnels, or tape on the floor for jumping and balancing. These activities give children helpful movement input, which can support regulation while encouraging cooperative play and turn-taking.

3. Playdough or Kinetic Sand Play ⏳
Squeezing, rolling, and shaping playdough is great for sensory input and fine motor skills. You can even join the activity by making shapes, animals, or letters together, which encourages communication and shared attention.

4. Music and Movement Time 🎶
Play music and engage in activities like dancing, clapping, or simple movements. Rhythm and movement can help children regulate their bodies while also promoting imitation, interaction, and fun social connection.

5. Calm Corner Activities ☮️
Create a cozy space with soft pillows, weighted blankets, fidget toys, and books. Spending time there together practicing deep breathing, reading, or quiet sensory play can help children learn self-regulation skills while still feeling supported by a parent.

These activities help children regulate their sensory needs while building connection, communication, and positive shared experiences with caregivers!

Your child with autism will get to participate in many activities similar to those mentioned in this post at our ABA centers. We focus on skill-building play activities, allowing your child to learn necessary life skills while having fun with other children! Contact us today to get your child enrolled.

Challenging behavior is often a form of communication. When a child doesn’t yet have the words or skills to express their needs, their behavior may be the way they show frustration, seek attention, escape a difficult task, or request something they want. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) focuses on understanding the “why” behind a behavior by carefully observing what happens before and after it occurs. By identifying the function of the behavior, our ABA therapists can teach more effective and appropriate ways for children to communicate their needs, build important life skills, and reduce behaviors that may interfere with learning or daily life. 💙

✨ Communication skills
✨ Social interaction and play

By breaking skills into manageable steps and celebrating progress along the way, ABA empowers children to gain confidence, connect with others, and become more independent in their world.

Include calming sensory tools (like fidgets or chewables), noise-reducing headphones for loud environments, a favorite comfort item for reassurance, preferred snacks and drinks to support smooth transitions, and visual communication aids to help your child express themselves and track progress. These simple, thoughtful items can help manage sensory needs, reduce anxiety, and create more positive outings for the whole family.
