Doula Leslie is loving life these days. Every family is unique in their own way, and how I support them.

What’s a Postpartum Doula? What do you do? I like to explain it as a life coach for new parents. I’m there for a lot of teaching…feeding techniques and holds, diapering, bathing, babywearing, swaddling. I teach you how to take care of your newborn. With that, a lot of my job is listening. I take time to really hear the parents and their concerns, and answer questions. I listen as they process their birth. Many times a family has an idea of how their birth is going to go, when nothing goes to “plan” it’s a lot to process. Having a trusted individual to talk to is key. Sometimes, when there’s not words to speak, simply holding space and allowing emotions to flow freely is what they need.

It’s been an eventful month, and I’m here with all the support, encouragement, and help that I can give. I’ve done many things including putting furniture together, organizing the nursery, washing and preparing bottles, feeding, changing diapers, giving Mom a break to nap, picking up lunch, and a ton of teaching.

Looking forward to staying on with this family for the duration of maternity leave. Loving the opportunity to serve, this line of work truly is a calling.

And just like that, the Doula contract has ended and it’s time for Mary Poppins to fly! What a great 9 weeks it has been! I’ve taught, encouraged, supported and helped this cute family thrive! Blessings to them as they continue on their journey of parenthood. I’m feeling super blessed to be a part of their story. While leaving day is hard, my confidence is this family is super high. I’m so proud of their efforts, paying attention to the needs of their tiny human, was exciting to watch them grow into the roles of parents!! I’m hoping I get to see them along the way!! I LOVE this job, and now, onward to the next family in need 🙌 😂

It’s week 6 with my sweet clients. Doula baby is growing super fast! He’s nursing like a champ, sleeping great and taking a bottle like a superstar. Mom and Dad are getting into a groove, learning baby’s cues and staying consistent with a bedtime routine. It’s remarkable to watch them thrive. As Doulas, we want the absolute best for our clients and we cheer with all we got when we see them empowered, encouraged and figuring it all out!! I got in some snuggles today with the little guy while Mama rested…he had a little infant massage after a bottle and took a nice little nap. Just a few more shifts to go and then I’ll be on my way. I sure have enjoyed getting to know this cute family.

This is my favorite part of being a Doula, get this….the ENTIRE family (dogs included) are taking a nap, all is calm and peaceful. I’ve started laundry, folded 3 loads and washed the dishes and tidied up a bit. Just sitting down now to revel in the peace and soak it in. It’s been a good afternoon so far ❤️

As a Postpartum Doula, my top priority is to serve the whole family. This includes the client’s fur babies. Our animals are absolutely part of the family unit. They too are transitioning into a new role protecting the new baby, that’s their baby too. Oftentimes, animals get put on the back burner simply because caring for a newborn is incredibly time consuming….but not this family. My clients have done an exceptional job making sure their two dogs get all the attention they need on top of being incredible parents to their firstborn baby. Doulas can play a vital part in helping to make sure things go smoothly the first couple of days with a new baby. Having compassion and being willing to give extra snuggles and get a little dog hair on ya can ensure success and let the animal know that they matter. In just a short time, this sweet girl and I formed a bond, and it’s made me happy to be a part of the journey ❤️

Were you scratching your head wondering what the heck a Postpartum Doula does? Lemme break today’s shift down for ya…upon arrival I was greeted by the family’s pups so they got lots of attention right off the bat. Then washed my hands and sat down and greeted the new parents and met the baby 😍 I spent a large portion of time talking to them about their birth experience and answered a bajillion questions, listened as they processed some emotions and watched them be so enamored with their tiny human. Mama got tired and went to lay down for a nap, Dad tackled some chores outside and got in a workout and I got in some snuggles with the pups at my feet. Then it was time for a feed so I helped Mama get comfy for that, positioned pillows and observed baby’s latch, which was impressive for only being a few days old! I got a load of laundry out of the dryer and folded and then got in some more snuggles as Mama closed her eyes for a bit while Dad got sent off to Trader Joe’s for a grocery run. When he got back I taught Dad how to use a Moby wrap and the little family took a walk with the pups and that was the end of day 1 🙌 This new family are incredible people, already amazing parents and I look forward to seeing them again. Dads play an essential role during the postpartum period!! Sometimes they struggle with what they can do to help, so as Moms let's bring them in and show them how to help! This is a fantastic article to share with them 😍
