Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast from any type of Candida. Oral and vaginal candidiasis are common. A recent laboratory study evaluated the anticandidal effects of Lamiaceae family essential oils (melissa, oregano CT carvacrol, thyme CT para-cymene, Spanish lavender, sage, rosemary CT 1,8-cineole, and peppermint). Melissa and oregano exhibited the best anticandidal activity (tested strains: C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. guilliermondii, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis), with Spanish lavender, peppermint, rosemary, and thyme also being very active. Oregano and thyme demonstrated the strongest antibiofilm activity, followed by Spanish lavender, peppermint, and rosemary. This suggests that these oils may be helpful in the management of candidiasis.
