‘Tis the season for seasonal allergies in pets.
There are some preventative measures you can take to help decrease the allergic response:
1: flea and tick prevention
2: fish based food for extra omega 3 fatty acids
3: weekly bathing to wash off pollen
4: foot baths when your pet comes in from outdoors
5: vacuuming and washing pet bedding
6: dye free/scent free laundry detergent
Treatment options include:
1: topical medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine
2: cytopoint injection to stop the itch
3: allergy testing and immunotherapy
4: topical steroids may be necessary in severe cases
Please seek veterinary care at the onset of itching and licking to avoid your pet getting secondary skin infections and ear infections.
Happy itch-free spring!
