For the first time in history, both teams playing in the Super Bowl featured a player with type 1 diabetes.

Seahawks offensive lineman Logan Brown was diagnosed in his teens and became a standout player in college, not giving up a single sack during his four years. At the NFL Scouting Combine, he impressed coaches and was signed to the Seahawks practice squad in 2025. A young player with lots of upside, Brown is expected to be a big contributor to the team's offense in the years to come.

On the Patriots' side, linebacker Chad Muma was diagnosed in the seventh grade. He was a standout high school player before attending the University of Wyoming, where the three-sport athlete also competed in basketball and track & field. He played his rookie year for the Jacksonville Jaguars before being signed to the Patriots' active roster at the end of 2025. In his time on the field for the Super Bowl, Muma landed one tackle.

Even though the Seahawks took home the Lombardi Trophy, both teams are winners in our hearts for showing the world that there are no limits for people with diabetes.

Sugar sweetened drinks, like soda, significantly increase your risk of kidney stones.🤕

Why is this?

Well, like many things, the answer is complicated. All the sugar in soda can increase the amount of lots of harmful things in your urine. Calcium, uric acid and oxalate are biggies.

WHAT!? Oxalate!? You may be thinking.

Yep! Although soda contains essentially ZERO oxalate, it might be able to raise urine oxalate levels. This is why it is SO important to understand that kidney stone prevention is not necessarily about a low oxalate diet.

🍃A (BIG!) source of oxalate in the body is oxalate made in your liver. Your liver can make oxalate from a variety of things. One of these things is fructose, which is found in VERY high amounts in soda.

🥤If you love bubbly drinks (as I do!), you are much better off choosing unsweetened sparkling water (like La Croix!). Or, enjoy a diet clear soda like Sprite or 7-Up on occasion.

Today we celebrate World Diabetes Day. Why do we celebrate? Because until the discovery of insulin in 1921, people with Type 1 Diabetes did not survive. We, as diabetes educators & a family who experiences diabetes on a daily basis (John has been living with Type 1 Diabetes for 35 years) are eternally grateful for the dedication and persistence of Dr. Frederick Banting and his assistant, Charles H. Best. Today is the birthday of Dr. Banting and the reason for the recognition of the worldwide celebration of World Diabetes Day. 💙

We get this question often: "Can nutrition make a difference in managing menopausal symptoms?" Our answer is, "Absolutely!".
Here are some general helpful guidelines. We suggest working with Registered Dietitian for an individualized plan (many health insurance plans cover our services as a wellness benefit).

Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, although it can happen earlier. Nutrition is crucial for maintaining overall health and may help in managing menopause symptoms.
