I remember when I did my internship here Summer โ€˜14. The ice cream social was one of my favorite things. I will never forget my experience there and will forever be grateful for it.

If this is not a word! It takes courage and hard work to reach that point where you can manage that which you have been honest about, acknowledged, identified, and accepted. Cheers to all of us out here doing the work!!!!

โ€œLove what you do and youโ€™ll never work a day in your lifeโ€ โ€” or so they say. I donโ€™t know about all that but what I do know is that I love talking with people about mental health issues and spreading awareness. ๐Ÿ’š

Things I want people to know about mental health.

๐Ÿ’š Mental Health is health!

๐Ÿ’š As of July 16 thereโ€™s a new national su***de prevention hotline. 9-8-8 which people can use to prevent su***de attempts.

๐Ÿ’š We need to talk about su***de. The more we talk about it the more preventable it is. And talking about it will not put it in someoneโ€™s head. Ask the question, โ€œhave you been thinking about su***de or wishing you would go to sleep and never wake up?โ€

๐Ÿ’š Crazy is a stigmatizing word that keeps people from accessing the help they need.

๐Ÿ’š OCD is not an adjective and it goes way beyond you throwing a tantrum because youโ€™re not getting exactly what you want when you want it or your attention to detail. OCD is an oftentimes debilitating condition and every time you say โ€œthat triggers my OCDโ€ you make light of and invalidate the experience of those that are living with this disorder.

๐Ÿ’š Itโ€™s ok to not be ok. Whatโ€™s not ok is to not seek help. Itโ€™s not ok for you and itโ€™s not ok for those that love you. If youโ€™re not ok thereโ€™s help available.

๐Ÿ’š To my family and friends please know Iโ€™m always available. I wonโ€™t โ€œanalyzeโ€ or โ€œsocial workโ€ or โ€œtherapizeโ€ you. Iโ€™ll listen. Iโ€™ll be compassionate. And if you want my advice Iโ€™ll give it.

๐Ÿ’š You are beautiful. Thereโ€™s nothing wrong with you; something happened to you.

I donโ€™t know about you but yesterday was a very stressful day. Yesterday tested me professionally in ways that I couldnโ€™t believe were happening. Whether I passed the tests remains to be seen but I can say with certainty is, that was yesterday and today is Friday which means itโ€™s the last day of my work week.

I refuse to let yesterdayโ€™s problems keep me from experiencing todayโ€™s joy. I understand we canโ€™t let go of everything but the things we can let go we certainly should. How can I have room to receive todayโ€™s gifts when Iโ€™m holding on to yesterdayโ€™s garbage?

So right now in this moment I invite you to close your eyes or lower your gaze to the bridge of your nose and breathe in and out. Allow each breath to become deeper, slower, and with each exhalation let go of yesterdayโ€™s garbage. Let go of the arguments, the feelings of insecurity, doubt, moments where you became defensive, problems that have been solved but you continue to ruminate on, and make room for todayโ€™s gifts and joys.

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!

It has been a few days since the world was informed that Cheslie Kryst died by su***de at age 30. The world remembers her as 2019 Miss USA the 5โ€™6โ€ 28 y/o Black rebel with big curly hair and a jumpsuit that stole the show. โ€œGlass ceilings can be broken in skirts or pantsโ€ she said. She was the oldest woman to win the pageant; thatโ€™s a lot of heat to take on.

2019 was a big year in beauty pageants. It was the year that 5 Black Queens won all major pageants. I remember feeling so much emotion (tears welling up as I remember that night). See? Iโ€™m Puerto Rican and we watched these growing up. In those days we had Dayanara Torres and Alicia Machado. Beautiful Latinas but they were white-passing. It always felt like it was not for me. My Abuelo would tell me that I was going to be the next Miss Piel Canela (Miss Cinnamon Skin) which was a pageant that celebrated Black skin. I would need to compete in a whole different stage (never did) if I wanted to because the main stage was for whites only. So when I saw those 5 beautiful women win those pageants I knew what it would mean for future generations.

But did you know that wasnโ€™t Cheslie Krystโ€™s only accomplishment? She was also a lawyer, a civil attorney that used to according to CNN do FREE LEGAL WORK FOR PEOPLE WHO WERE SENTENCED UNFAIRLY! This Black Queen wasnโ€™t just breaking ceilings on the runway she was breaking them in the courtroom too.

In 2021 she wrote an essay for Allure magazine where she described the hamster wheel that many of us Black women experience daily. We achieve and achieve and achieve and itโ€™s not enough. We feel empty, not enough, and like time is running out. Like the things we thought mattered were not our own desires but they were societyโ€™s expectations of us. She ended her essay with hope that she was entering her 30โ€™s โ€œsearching for joy and purpose on my own termsโ€.

Itโ€™s clear that Cheslie was a person that was struggling with some very negative thoughts now add to that the trolls and you have a recipe for disaster. No matter how many positive comments she got the negative always stuck. Why? Because they proved what she already believed of herself what society taught her to think of herself!

Black woman you are beautiful and powerful beyond measure! If youโ€™re struggling with negative thoughts, depression, anxiety, lessons learned from trauma, and letting go of things that no longer serve you go seek therapy! There are therapistโ€™s available and crisis lines. Su***de is not the only option you have left!

What ifs can either stunt or promote your healing. Thereโ€™s a lot of what ifs associated with starting therapy.

โ€œWhat if they donโ€™t understand me?โ€

โ€œWhat if they tell me Iโ€™m crazy?โ€

โ€œWhat if they just push pills at me?โ€

โ€œWhat if they donโ€™t like me?โ€

โ€œWhat if people find out Iโ€™m seeing a therapist?โ€

โ€œWhat ifโ€ฆ?โ€

Butโ€ฆ

โ€œWhat if it works?โ€

โ€œWhat if I start feeling better?โ€

โ€œWhat if this person actually understands me?โ€

โ€œWhat if thereโ€™s a way I can afford it?โ€

โ€œWhat if it helps?โ€

The truth is that you miss 100% of the shots you donโ€™t take. Go to the link in my bio and request a consult. If Iโ€™m not the right therapist for you I understand; that happens. However, you and your mental wellness are worth the try.

What do you say to a mom whoโ€™s lost her child to su***de? The only thing we can do is respect her privacy and send her so much love and healing energy. We are a community and has been a part of our lives if only through a screen for a long time. Iโ€™m so very sorry for your loss and pray for you and your family.

For everyone else: su***de is not contagious and talking about it does not make it more likely that someone will try or do it. In fact itโ€™s the complete opposite! The more we talk about su***de the less likely people are to actually do it. So letโ€™s talk about it because by doing so we reduce stigma and give space for others to open up about their own struggles. Letโ€™s end the code of silence and shame around mental health issues in black and latino communities!

Psychological while I wait.
Psychological self-care are activities that directly impact your mind, spirit, and soul. Reading a book is always my go to for this kind of self-care but you can also do a digital detox where you stay off devices for a while or learn something new like a new knitting pattern or even incorporate a mindfulness practice into your day.
Whatโ€™s your favorite way to take care of your psyche?
