Dr. Saveren Scannapiego, M.D., F.A.C.S., is an ophthalmologist specializing in corneal and external diseases of the eye as well as cataract surgery and treatment of glaucoma. With over 35 years of experience, he was one of the first eye surgeons in New Jersey to use the newest femtosecond laser for cataract surgery and pioneered the latest stitchless pterygium with graft surgery.

Dr. Scannapiego attended New York University for his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree and went on to the University of Bologna Medical School where he graduated Cum Laude and in the top one percent of his class. He then completed a medical and surgical internship at New York Medical College, Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital. His ophthalmology training was completed at the New Jersey Medical School with a three year residency program. Subsequent to this residency specialization training he went on to further specialize in corneal surgery and diseases at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary as a Corneal Fellow, publishing many articles on corneal surgery, including those on the “second eye syndrome” and “a modified suture technique of corneal transplant.”

Dr. Scannapiego has served as Chief of Staff of the prestigious Eye Institute of New Jersey, Medical Director of the New Jersey Eye Bank and Coordinator of the Corneal Service at the Newark Eye and Ear Infirmary and Eye Institute of New Jersey. He was the first surgeon in New Jersey to perform a triple procedure of Corneal Transplant, Cataract Extraction and Implant.

Dr. Scannapiego is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, an attending surgeon at The Newark Eye and Ear Infirmary, Clara Maas Hospital, River Drive Surgical & Laser Center and Trinitas Hospital. He is board certified by The American Academy Of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Scannapiego has vast experience treating Corneal diseases as well as Glaucoma and Cataracts and is committed to providing his patients with compassionate care combined with the latest technological advances in the field of medicine. He is one of the few surgeons in New Jersey who is certified to treat Cataracts with the newest femtosecond laser technology.

Dr. Scannapiego also donates his time and skills to people in need around the world. In the last eight years he has been heading a humanitarian medical mercy mission. He takes six weeks out of his busy schedule each year to personally give free medical and surgical care to needy peoples in under developed areas of the globe such as Africa and South East Asia.
