Typewriters played a surprisingly important role in pharmacy history — especially before computers and electronic medical records became standard.
Many independent pharmacies kept a heavy manual typewriter on a back counter or in the office. The sound of keys and the “ding” of the carriage return was part of daily workflow — right alongside pill counting trays and mortar & pestle.
Pictured is one of the typewriters and labels used at Burgie Drugs.

Kathie Clawson has worked at Burgie Drugs for 55 years and is still counting pills. We have had hundreds of Burgie girls and she has been Mother Burgie to them all ❤️

Larry Proffitt is the third and current owner. He bought Burgie Drugs in 1969, the same year this photo was taken. Larry is pictured with the spool filing system that was used to organize, store and retrieve prescription papers. A lot has changed over the years but our customer service has not. Come by and see us 🙂🙂

Max Jett was the second owner of Burgie Drugs. This picture was taken in 1956. His first pharmacy license was in 1927 and is displayed in the store.

Burgie Drugstore when it was downtown Elizabethton. It is now Jiggy Rays. Burgie Drugstore has been in business since 1892 and moved to the West G street location in 1976. We are the oldest drugstore in East Tennessee. We still have many treasures in our store. We would love for you to come in and see us 🙂🙂
