California Northstate University College of Health Sciences Now Accepting Applications for 2023-2024 School Year

Offering a holistic faculty-led environment for students to achieve academic success and personal growth

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA – The California Northstate University Undergraduate College of Health Sciences (CNUCHS) is now accepting applications for the 2023-2024 school year.

CNUCHS is home to a uniquely designed bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences. This pre-health program offers a curriculum that focuses on STEM foundation study, which is critical to pursuing the advanced learning for students wishing to become physicians, dentists, pharmacists, clinical psychologists, or other healthcare professionals. CNUCHS will welcome and consider applications from high school seniors and transfer students from other community colleges or universities.

“Our mission to advance the science and art of healthcare education is carried out by our passionate team, who are wholeheartedly dedicated to training our students,” said Dr. Heather Brown, Dean of CNUCHS. “The California Health Sciences team supporting students includes award-winning faculty and scholars, well-trained support staff and an administration focused on student success. Unlike other universities, students can expect to be taught by faculty and not by teaching assistants.”

CNUCHS offers a holistic faculty-led environment for students, allowing for academic success, personal growth, and enrichment. Students learn through engaging, high-impact curriculum and all participate in embedded service-learning and scholarly research.

“Faculty are at the forefront of education leading students to specialize in the health sciences, building the hands-on skills required to succeed in professional careers including medicine, dentistry, clinical psychology and pharmacy,” said. Dr. Brown.

CNUCHS students are guided via a dual-advising system that integrates faculty and academic advising. Before stepping foot on to campus, students are assigned health professions advisors to assist them in their journey.

“At California Northstate University College of Health Sciences, we offer a first-year success seminar series to help students gain knowledge and confidence with independent living and learning skills. Students work collaboratively, creating strong foundations and friendships through clubs, coursework and mentorship programs,” said Dr. Rikki Corniola, Assistant Dean of Curriculum and Assessment.

“From the beginning, we teach the importance of organization, perseverance, and passion for success – focusing on mental discipline, service-minded action, self-reflection and ownership. We take great pride in building advising relationships built on mutual respect and appreciation,” said Dr. Brown.

Applications are being accepted for Spring 2023, Summer 2023 and Fall 2023. Apply now for early consideration and scholarship opportunities. California Northstate University College of Dental Medicine Announces Campus Expansion

New extension campus to be located at 2200 Broadway in Sacramento

ELK GROVE, CA – California Northstate University (CNU) is excited to announce a university extension of its College of Dental Medicine, which will be expanding to 2200 Broadway in Sacramento.

California Northstate University College of Dental Medicine has been planning for this expansive, state-of-the-art facility since 2019. The new location will allow for an 80-chair dental clinic that will provide quality dental care to the greater Sacramento Valley community. The commercial real estate investment firm, Buzz Oates, assisted CNU College of Dental Medicine in acquiring this building.

“Three years ago, we made our initial application for a Dental Medicine Program at CNU with a vision of developing a premiere dental program that is focused on service to the community,” said Dr. Kevin Keating, Dean of the California Northstate University College of Dental Medicine. “While looking for a home for the program, we evaluated at a combination of factors including transportation availability, centrality to the greater Sacramento area, and a location that could serve a variety of local needs.”

California Northstate University College of Dental Medicine looks forward to utilizing their new facility to continue to build upon their program. Their first class was admitted in January of 2022, their second cohort was admitted in July of 2022, and they are currently admitting their third cohort of students. This facility will help to provide key teachings and clinical uses for the future.

“Our university has a health science focus that is centered on the value of service to the community,” said Dr. Alvin Cheung, President and CEO of California Northstate University. “We see the Broadway corridor in Sacramento as an area that will provide a variety of housing, commercial, and service-related activities. We look forward to developing a lasting legacy of healthcare professionals through education, clinical interaction, and service to the community.”

The vision of the California Northstate University College of Dental Medicine is to provide constructive innovation in its education programs, and leadership in integrating oral health care into human health care systems. The four-year program is intended to produce dentists who are capable of performing at the highest level in an ever more complex and demanding environment of emerging technology, social change, human disease management, and evolving health systems.

ELK GROVE, CA – Dr. Jennifer Courtney is proud to lead California Northstate University’s (CNU) efforts to support community health. Over the last year, she has played an integral role in coordinating community clinics that have successfully administered over 45,000 COVID-19 vaccines and over 500 doses of Jynneos Monkeypox vaccine.

“Our participation in recent community health clinics is just one of the many ways that the team at California Northstate University aims to promote public health, mitigate health disparities, and guard our community against pandemics,” said Dr. Courtney. “I have been deeply invested in serving others since my time as a student at CNU. Now, as a professor, my mission is to always put those in the community first while training our students to provide great patient care.”

Dr. Courtney is an Assistant Professor of Clinical and Administrative Sciences at California Northstate University College of Pharmacy (CNU-COP) and a practicing pharmacist at a community pharmacy in Fairfield. Dr. Courtney received her Bachelor of Sciences degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis, and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from California Northstate University College of Pharmacy.

“At CNU, I have had the rewarding opportunity to practice at the top of my license while teaching others to do the same,” said Dr. Courtney. “My community outreach efforts have provided me with profound professional fulfillment. The feeling I receive when making a difference in a patient’s life is simply indescribable.”

Dr. Courtney’s professional interests include leadership, vaccinations, educating on substance use disorders and pharmacy and patient advocacy. Since losing her father to the coronavirus, she has been passionate about vaccinating as many individuals against COVID-19 as possible.

“Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare providers,” said Dr. Courtney. “Many times, the community pharmacist sees a patient before they even go to their physician’s office. I look forward to using my clinical and professional skills to educate and help as many individuals as possible.”

Dr. Courtney is a pharmacy leader at both the state and national level and is the recent recipient of the prestigious 2022 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) New Investigator Award. In 2020, she was awarded SVPhA Pharmacist of the Year Award which recognizes an outstanding new practitioner who has demonstrated leadership at multiple levels of pharmacy.

Dr. Courtney served as President to one of the California Pharmacist’s Association (CPhA) local chapters, Sacramento Valley Pharmacist’s Association (SVPhA), in 2018 and currently serves as Speaker-Elect for the CPhA. She also received the New Practitioner Award from CPhA in 2020. Dr. Courtney also serves as the student advisor for the CPhA/APhA-ASP chapter at CNU where she enjoys precepting community outreach events with students.

Dr. Courtney lives in Fairfield with her husband and their two Labrador Retrievers and enjoys traveling, camping, and working out.
