When I went to school for massage therapy 22 years ago, they focused heavily on muscles and their origins and insertions, kinesiology, and how to use proper body mechanics while working on another person.
What I’ve learned over the years, though, is that our society is so fast-paced that most people have completely dysregulated nervous systems. And when the body cannot fully relax…..it cannot release trapped emotions…..and it cannot heal. The body remains in a constant state of fight or flight and it becomes a vicious cycle that compounds.
So when I have people who come to me seeking ‘deep tissue massage’ and tell me ‘no pain, no gain’…… I usually explain that I’m probably not the right fit for them. If a body is tense and hanging onto stagnant emotions…..no amount of pressure is going to help release that.
My approach to massage has shifted over the years. Initially I was focused on making people’s muscles feel great……but now….. I want every person who comes into my space to feel comfortable, nurtured, loved, safe, and held. I want to give the body and mind a space to truly decompress.
If you have a busy brain and you struggle to relax, or you have a stressful job and you are going from sun-up to sun-down, or you have kiddos that demand a lot of your attention, or you are an empath that absorbs other people’s emotions……this might be exactly the type of massage your body needs. ❤️🙏🏻
