This post about death and funerals prob won’t get a lot of likes but that’s ok!! 😄 It’s a really important topic to me - This week’s newsletter unpacks the things I learned about “green burials” and the funeral industry when I lost my beloved mother nearly 4 years ago. I have long been wanting to share this information about green burials more publicly, as I knew almost NOTHING about “non-conventional” options for burials when I faced these decisions with my mom and family. My mom’s natural burial was a part of my healing process, and I think also a comforting element for her in her final days, knowing that she would quickly return to the earth. How we die and how we rest is important, and the choice is so personal. This is just what I found to be true for me. You can sign up for my newsletter at caseymeans.com/newsletter to get the latest issue and learn more. There is also crazy 13 stats about the funeral industry, and lots of resources. The emails coming in as a response to this newsletter are beautiful. Thank you 🙏

With increasing levels of toxic compounds in our environment, we need strategies to help buffer ourselves from the effects they can have on our bodies. Avoidance is first and foremost. Studies in cells and in animals suggest that certain compounds in plants known as polyphenols (it's the largest class of phytochemicals) may be helpful in reducing the impact of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and their metabolites: acrylonitrile, polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, phthalates and bisphenol A.

Of course, we need human clinical data to support these findings, but why wait? Eating the rainbow of diverse, colorful foods provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and thousands of phytochemicals to help keep the body in check.

Main Stage at yesterday in Vegas alongside wonderful friends and . 12,000 attendees at this conference - it’s wild. Belly of the beast of conventional healthcare trying to spread the message of foundational health… I talked about how our health is getting destroyed because of our toxic environment and culture and corporations are profiting trillions off of it.
The CEO of Johnson and Johnson went on stage right after me. Our panel was on longevity and it was super interesting. I broke down what I focused on in my talk in my newsletter that I sent out yesterday which you can get at caseymeans.com/newsletter, but simply put, the longevity conservation is missing the mark. We shouldn’t really be focusing on longevity hacks when in reality our life expectancy is starkly decreasing in the US. Did you know the average American male life expectancy has dropped to 73? (JAMA data from last November). John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and James Madison all lived into their mid 80s (and 90 for John Adams). We are getting destroyed.

Other speakers included:
Jill Biden – First Lady of the United States
Halle Berry – Actor, Director, Producer, and Founder of Respin
Lenny Kravitz – Artist and Founder, Let Love Rule Foundation
Tom Mihaljevic – CEO & President, Cleveland Clinic
Joaquin Duato – Chairman & CEO, Johnson & Johnson
John Legend – Artist, Entrepreneur, Activist
Chelsea Clinton – Vice Chair, Clinton Foundation
Greg Adams – Chair & CEO, Kaiser Permanente
Lance Bass - Artist (N*SYNC)
Kyrsten Sinema – US Senator, Arizona
Anne Wojcicki – CEO and Co-Founder, 23andMe
Maria Shriver – Journalist & Women’s Health Advocate

A major highlight was getting to meet many of you who came out and said hi. 🙏

I am so glad this book is impacting people and playing a small part in a national discussion on chronic disease reversal. Our body is an awe-inspiring inter-connected system. Solutions to thrive today and prevent disease tomorrow are simpler than we are told and not found in the doctor’s office. Our health policies and incentives must reflect this.

Most people know about beta-carotene but don’t know much about the other 699 plant carotenoids. One of the carotenoids I find particularly interesting is beta-cryptoxanthin, which sounds mysterious. Here are some fascinating findings about it.

It appears to be a nutrient shown to help reduce ovarian decline [PMID: 27430906] and even potentially reduce the risk for endometriosis [PMID: 29401293]. It is localized in the human ovaries, along with about 13 other carotenoids [PMID: 16211314]. It may play a role in healthy body composition and bone health [PMID: 26747887].

Beta-cryptoxanthin is found in orange plant foods, and one of the foods with the highest amount of it is cooked butternut squash, which is even better than #2 on the list, raw butternut squash (which most people wouldn’t be eating). The cooking of the squash helps with the bioavailability of this fat-soluble carotenoid. Best to add some ghee, butter, or coconut milk to the squash to further assist in the absorption of beta-cryptoxanthin, although it’s even more bioavailable than beta-carotene. And yes, it converts to vitamin A in the body.

Other top 5 foods containing beta-cryptoxanthin are persimmons, papaya, and tangerines. From the study on ovarian decline, 400 micrograms was the amount recommended. There are 6388 micrograms in 1 cup of cooked butternut squash.

Mitochondria may just be one of the most important components of your cells. Dysfunction may also contribute to chronic disease aging.

A newly published article showed that melatonin plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the blood-brain barrier. As we know, the brain barrier helps protect the brain from xenobiotics and harmful endogenous compounds, and when it's disrupted, there can be neurological issues. Melatonin is active in both the blood-brain barrier and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barriers, where there are melatonin-binding sites. Dr. Fernanda Amaral is one of the authors of the article and is a featured expert in the free Melatonin Masterclass.
