Are women safe in the United States???

Me: “Mom, what do you want for Mother’s Day?”

Mom: “62 million addresses and a baseball bat.”

Me: “Honestly… fair enough.”

And the wildest part? Every woman I told this joke to didn’t gasp.

She nodded.

Because behind the humor is something heavy that mothers carry quietly every single day—the fear their daughters grow up learning too early how to stay safe instead of how to stay free.

They teach us to text when we get home.
To watch our drinks.
To share locations.
To avoid certain streets.
To smile carefully.
To say no politely.
To leave quickly.
To trust our instincts.

Not because they’re dramatic.

Because they’ve lived long enough to know why those lessons matter.

So when moms hear numbers like that, they don’t hear statistics.

They hear risk.
They hear history.
They hear their daughters’ names.

And suddenly a baseball bat doesn’t sound extreme.

It sounds protective.

It sounds like love.

Did your mom teach you safety rules before you even understood why you needed them? 💔

Too many women lose their lives during pregnancy, not from medical causes, but from violence at the hands of someone they loved and trusted.

This isn’t just violence, it’s a maternal health crisis!

At Futures Without Violence, we work with health care providers and domestic violence advocates to ensure that signs of abuse never go unnoticed, and that every woman gets the safety and support she deserves before it’s too late.
