Pneumothoraxes or lung punctures are extremely rare when needling is performed by a highly trained and licensed Acupuncturist. We have thousands of hours of fundamental and clinical training. The label of “Dry needling” originated as an Acupuncture technique to differentiate and separate itself for the use of other professions outside of Acupuncture. Without foundational education in anatomy, needle depth, and positioning of a needle in relationship to the areas surrounding the lungs, other practitioners are putting people at unnecessary risk.
This unfortunate incident could have been avoided and now it has affected more than the player, himself.
If you research dry needling online, most courses are weekend courses of 12-50+ hours of training.
Let me ask you this: would you rather be needled by someone with 50 hours of training or by someone with thousands of hours of training?
Is dry needling common for NFL players? How long will the Steelers' star be sidelined? Here's what we know.
