It’s time to highlight another one of our amazing yogis, and this time it’s Torie!

Torie is one of the most loving, big-hearted people I’ve ever met, and I’m always so inspired by her generosity & giving spirit, plus her boundless talent with crochet and baking!

Read the Q&A below to learn more about Torie!

Q: What’s one thing no one would expect about you?
A: In high-school I was in choir and theater, but also played flag football.

Q: What got you into doing yoga?
A: I wanted to work on self care that can help me also be much healthier.

Q: How do you practice yoga off the mat?
A: Breathing techniques of yoga are very helpful working a customer service job. Taking a moment to recenter yourself can go a long way.

Q: What is your favorite pose and why?
A: Lizard pose. I get such an amazing stretch with it.

Q: What advice do you have for someone just starting out with yoga?
A: You do not have to be perfect. Its a journey, not a race to improvement and you will notice differences as time goes on and its wonderful to see progress.

Make sure to say hey in the comments! 👋 And if you’ve ever tried one of Torie’s famous home-baked snacks, let her know how much you loved it! 👇

Get ready for a whole month focused on ta**ra… but it may not be what you think!

In the West, most people think ta**ra is only s*xuality & s*xual experiences, but a true ta**ra yoga practice is so much more.

The word ta**ra itself means “to weave”. 🪢

While some spiritual disciplines encourage separating oneself from the human experience in order to reach enlightenment (such as fasting, celibacy, and asceticism), ta**ra yoga encourages embracing ALL aspects of the human experience as part of your spiritual growth.

Through ta**ra yoga, everything becomes a sacred part of the spiritual journey; food, meditation, joy, sadness, creativity, stress, and yes, even s*x.

So this month, embrace your embodied humanity as a part of your spiritual path, rather than something holding you back from it. Focus on perceiving sensation in all its forms, even the unpleasant parts. It all gets woven together to create your unique human experience. ✨♥️

Our team just got a little bigger! Introducing our newest instructor, who has been a long-time student with us, Heather Tortora!

Read on to get to know her a little better, in her own words!

“Hi my name is Heather Tortora. I have been a student at Akasha Yoga Room since Kayla opened and have enjoyed being a part of her practice and practicing alongside so many beautiful yogis! My journey with yoga began over 20 years ago practicing with many wonderful teachers in NewYork, Michigan and now Florida! I became certified to teach the Sivananda path of Hatha yoga in 2003 but have enjoyed many other paths including Iyengar and Anusara yoga. I am honored to be asked to teach for Kayla and look forward to sharing my yoga with each of you! Namaste 🙏”

Heather will be teaching the morning Hatha classes on Tuesday & Thursday, which have now moved to 9:30 am.

Please give her a warm welcome in the comments!

Possibly one of the most recognizable yoga asanas, almost everyone is at least somewhat familiar with Downward Facing Dog. But just because it’s well-known, doesn’t mean it’s easy for everyone!

Here are some tips to try out the next time you’re in Down Dog to help you stay a little more comfortable:

1. Bend your knees
2. Reach your belly toward your thighs
3. Start to straighten your legs just enough to feel a little length (keep them as bent as you need)
4. Press firmly into the ground through your finger pads and knuckles
5. If it’s ok for your neck, gaze toward your toes
6. Try to hug your ears with your armpits

Remember that your heels DO NOT need to reach the ground at any point, unless that’s comfortable for you.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. All we’re trying to do is create lift & length.

Let me know, did these tips work for you? ⬇️

Time for our next Student Spotlight, Julee! She’s one of the OG hot vinyasa girlies and she brings so much authenticity and life to our space (not to mention that I can always count on her to know what side we’re on & what pose comes next in the sequence when I forget!).

Read on and get to know this amazing lady a little better!

Q: What’s one thing people don’t expect about you?
A: People are often surprised to learn that I’m quite shy and reserved at first. However, once I feel comfortable, I open up easily and enjoy connecting with others. I’ve even been told I have a bit of “RBF,” which tends to catch people off guard until they get to know me better!

Q: What got you into doing yoga?
A: I started practicing yoga as a teenager, but over the past few years it has become a regular and essential part of my life. Yoga helps me maintain my mobility while also providing a space to quiet my mind and find balance throughout the week.

Q: How do you practice yoga off the mat?
A: For me, practicing yoga off the mat means using the breathing techniques I’ve learned to manage anxiety and stay grounded in daily life. It’s a way to bring mindfulness and calm into moments that might otherwise feel overwhelming.

Q: What is your favorite pose and why?
A: It’s hard to choose just one, but at the moment, Sleeping Pigeon is my favorite pose. It allows me to release tension and find deep relaxation—both physically and emotionally.

Q: What advice do you have for someone just starting out with yoga?
A: Just show up for yourself—no expectations, no pressure. Even if you spend the whole class sitting or lying on your mat, you’re still practicing. Don’t worry about how you look or what anyone else is doing; yoga is a personal journey, and everyone’s path looks a little different.

Make sure to say hey 👋 to Julee in the comments, or share your favorite moment in class with her!

And just like that, it’s 2026! 🎉🎊🥳

Even though the calendar says we’ve begun a new year, the Earth knows that her new beginning is in the Spring.

Let’s decide to leave behind the resolutions, the pressure to be fresh, the need to reach your goals right now, this moment, this month.

Instead, let January be about preparation. This is the time to decide what you want, the time to look forward with hope & excitement, the time to lay the groundwork for what’s on its way.

We’ll be practicing downward dog as our peak pose because it is such a foundational posture in yoga, it builds strength, alignment, and focus, literally preparing you for the practice ahead.

So go on and let yourself dream big! Start making plans, getting things in order, laying the groundwork. Just don’t feel pressured to act on it right this moment.

I hope so many wonderful blessings find you this year. This is the time to prepare yourself for when they arrive. ♥️
