Kids hear everything, especially during moments of grief.
Even the smallest phrases can shape how they understand loss and healing.
Here are a few common things we say with good intentions, but that can actually cause confusion or fear:
“Don’t cry, be strong.” → It teaches them to hide feelings.
“Grandpa’s just sleeping.” → It can make bedtime scary.
“We don’t talk about sad things.” → It silences healing.
“They wouldn’t want you to be sad.” → It adds guilt to grief.
“You’ll understand when you’re older.” → It leaves them lost now.
Grieving kids don’t need perfect words...they just need safe space to ask, feel, and be heard.
