🚨 Vaginal vs. Uterine Prolapse in Cows — What’s the Difference? 🚨
With calving season here, we tend to see an increase in prolapse cases. Knowing the difference can help you respond quickly and appropriately.
🔹 Vaginal Prolapse
• Typically occurs before calving
• You’ll see pink/red tissue protruding, often when the cow is lying down
• These cows are usually still pregnant
👉 In most vaginal prolapse cases, we prefer that you bring the cow to the clinic so we can properly clean, replace, and place retention sutures if needed.
🔹 Uterine Prolapse
• Occurs after calving
• Usually happens shortly after delivery
• The uterus is fully turned inside out and protruding
⚠️ Important: If this happens, do NOT move the cow unless absolutely necessary. Keep her calm, clean if possible, and call us immediately. We will come to you. Moving her can cause additional damage or bleeding.
As always, the sooner we’re involved, the better the outcome for your cow. If you’re unsure which type you’re dealing with, give us a call right away.
