Basketball is a popular school sport in Maine, and the thrill of tournament time is nearly upon us! But did you know that high school basketball has among the highest ankle sprain rates of all sports, with injury rates increasing over the past decade.

Joshua Mayich, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot & ankle and trauma care at Northern Light Orthopedics in Presque Isle, shares these tips for preventing injuries for ball players, as well as some guidance for returning to play after an injury.

Know your risk
• Have you had a sprain or injury before? Your risk is increased by 98%!
• Contact increases your risk. Those who live “in the paint” need to be extra aware.
• A family history of ankle injuries increases your risk.

Injury Prevention
• Warmup: A 10-minute warm-up including strength, balance, agility, and aerobic components reduces your risk of injury.
• Ankle bracing: Both lace-up and semi-rigid braces greatly reduce ankle sprain risk.
• Training: Balance and coordination exercises improve control and reduce injury risk.

Rehabilitation and Return to Play
• Complete your therapy! If you’ve gotten an injury and were prescribed treatment – following through with it to the end leads to a much lower risk of re-injury.
• Address modifiable risk factors, such as body mass index, muscle strength, and ankle flexibility.

We wish all of our local high school basketball teams good luck and safe playing for the rest of their season and during the regional and state tournaments.

Snowboarding is an exciting winter sport, but it comes with increased risks to foot and ankle injuries over skiing. In fact, ankle sprains and fractures are the most frequent injury in snowboarding. Understanding these risks and how to prevent them can help you enjoy the slopes safely.

Joshua Mayich, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot & ankle and trauma care at Northern Light Orthopedics in Presque Isle, tells us that this thrilling and healthy sport can be enjoyed safely with the right preparation and precautions. By wearing protective gear, building your strength and balance, choosing appropriate terrain for your skill level, and seeking prompt medical care when injured, you can significantly reduce your risk of foot and ankle injuries and spend more time enjoying the mountain.

Whether you are just shoveling snow from your doorstep or tackling your entire driveway, you could end up with an injury this winter. To help avoid that, we’ve asked Rachel Emery, a physical therapist at Northern Light Rehabilitation, to share some shoveling tips.

• Start with a warm-up. Cold muscles can strain more easily. Consider shoulder rolls, neck rolls, and marching in place.

• Choose the right shovel for you. It should be long enough so when you push it your knees are slightly bent, and your trunk is pitched forward just slightly. Your shovel blade should be light and small as to avoid overloading.

• Keep a wide stance, and wear boots that grip. When you hold the shovel, your hands should be at least 12 inches apart.

• To avoid twisting, step in the direction you want to toss the snow and toss it forward/lift the shovel with your legs. Or push the snow forward.

• Stand up periodically to relieve pressure from your low back.

• Take it slow and break up the work into manageable chunks. If you can't say a full sentence, you are working too hard.

• Stop immediately if you have signs of a heart attack, such as dizziness or chest tightness.

Our team in Northern Light Rehabilitation wishes you safe shoveling this winter season!

Today is normally the day when people ditch their New Year’s resolutions, but we wanted to let you know that it’s okay if you aren’t on track, you can still succeed with your resolutions using goal setting.

Look at your goals you’ve set. Is there a way to make some slight adjustments to achieve that first step? “We constantly set goals for ourselves that we feel we should easily be able to achieve, but our skills vary day to day which influences our behavior. Looking at this with goal setting can really make a positive impact,” says Angela Haley, LCPC, CCS, clinical manager of Inpatient Services at Northern Light Acadia Hospital.

For example, let’s say you drink three cups of coffee a day and want to get down to one cup a day. Instead of going to one cup immediately, try drinking only two cups for a day, then go to one cup in a couple of weeks. This small change helps make your goal more achievable.

If you also need a cheat day, take it. Have a day of fun and then get back on track the next day.

⭐Congratulations to our very own Joni Hart, RN, as the 2025 Shining Star awardee! The Shining Star award recognizes an individual who embodies each of the True North Award criteria through unwavering preoccupation with raising quality, making access easy, guiding the way, and seeing the individual. They tirelessly foster a culture which provides the highest levels of health and well-being for all.

Joni Hart, RN, Manager of Northern Light Orthopedics in Ellsworth clearly recognized the benefit of hard-wiring quality into our Orthopedic Joint Replacement Program. As an experienced clinician and manager, Joni knew that taking our program to the next level would require an industry recognized methodology and framework that would foster quality and reliability. Through collaboration with other Northern Light Hospitals, Joni tapped into the resources at The Joint Commission (TJC) for a structured model.

Energized, and with grit and determination, Joni stepped up to lead Maine Coast on an ambitious journey to satisfy the criteria of the structured model and earn The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval® for Joint Replacement, for both total hip and total knee replacement, a comprehensive quality program designed to ensure highly reliable care through nationally recognized treatment guidelines to yield superior quality outcomes for patients.

Over a 12-month period, Joni demonstrated continuous compliance with TJC performance standards, including all aspects of a patient's joint replacement preparation, surgical procedure, recovery, physical therapy and associated outcomes. Work spanning nearly every department in the hospital to establish and implement data analytics, a new workflow, and elevated levels of transparency and accountability.

In June of 2025, the hospital and program underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review by The Joint Commission, culminating in Maine Coast Hospital being awarded the Gold Seal of Approval. Joni led every aspect personally with perseverance and commitment to excellence - a prestigious recognition for Northern Light Health and a proud moment for Joni.

Congratulations!

We celebrated True North Week across our Northern Light Health system. True North recognizes individuals and teams whose behaviors and accomplishments exemplify a profound dedication to the Northern Light Health promise and commitments.
