Arnica montana (arnica) is a flowering plant native to mountainous regions of Europe and also naturalized in parts of North America. It is best known for external use in bruises, muscle soreness, swelling, and minor soft-tissue injury. Arnica is valued for anti-inflammatory activity and is found in two main topical forms: herbal creams or gels made with plant extract, and homeopathic products made with highly diluted arnica. Because full-strength arnica can be toxic if taken internally, it is typically reserved for external use, where it remains a widely recognized remedy for bruising and post-injury soreness.
