✨Dr. Mark Skowron - Optometrist of the Year✨
A native of Villa Park, IL, Dr. Skowron earned his undergraduate degree from Western Illinois University before graduating from Illinois College of Optometry in 1981. Just two years later, he purchased his own practice and established Skowron Eyecare in Elmhurst, which has since become a cornerstone of the community. Over the years, he expanded his impact by acquiring and consolidating multiple practices, and in 1986 founded Bensenville Eyecare, which he later transitioned to Dr. Lavender Streiff in 2008 to ensure continued patient care.
Dr. Skowron has been widely recognized for his service and leadership. He was named the Illinois Optometric Key Person of the Year in 2010, received the Illinois College of Optometry Alumnus of the Year Award in 2013, and was honored with the Lions Club Melvin Jones Award in 2015 for nearly three decades of providing free eye care, glasses, and contact lenses to those in need. His dedication to community service also earned him the Volunteer Service Award from School District 205 for 30 consecutive years of inspiring students through career day.
Beyond his clinical excellence, Dr. Skowron has been a passionate leader within the profession. He served on the IOA Board of Directors from 2012 to 2019 and became President of the IOA in 2018-2019. Earlier in his career, he also served a decade as President of the West Suburban Optometric Society, personally funding its operations to keep the society strong.
Today, his legacy continues through his family, including his daughter Michelle, who joined Skowron Eyecare in 2020 after earning her own degree from ICO. Outside of optometry, Dr. Skowron enjoys traveling, golfing, and spending cherished time with his wife of 37 years, Gail, their three children, and grandchildren Gianna and Dominic.
