Heart Health Month: Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women in North Carolina, and Black women are disproportionately impacted. The latest NCDHHS Health Disparities Analysis Report shows higher rates of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes among Black women in North Carolina —conditions that often occur together and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
The good news? Prevention works. Nearly 75% of heart disease cases are preventable, and early screening and support can make a powerful difference.
That’s why NCDHHS partners with NC WISEWOMAN and the NC Minority Diabetes Prevention Program (NC MDPP) to offer free screenings, lifestyle coaching, and culturally responsive support for women ages 35–64 who meet eligibility criteria.
Knowing your numbers—blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and BMI—is an important first step toward protecting your heart and your future.

When books are within reach, reading together becomes easier — and those small moments add up.

A few minutes on the couch. A bedtime story. A page or two before dinner.

That’s where connection happens, language grows, and confidence begins.

You don’t need a perfect routine or extra hours in the day. Just a book … and each other.
