When we started Genesis 8 years ago, we had a vision of creating a building full of complimentary and dedicated practitioners that shared our goal of creating a team-like environment that promoted patient success.

After adding Martha, a talented massage therapist, to our chiropractic, functional medicine and nutrition services, we felt the obvious next step was to look for a trusted physical therapist to team with. We have long considered physical therapy to be a great compliment to how we practice.

When our dear friend, Dr. Thomas Crassas, decided to start his own practice, Philo Physical Therapy, alongside our wonderful neighbors at A-Z Urgent, we were absolutely thrilled to welcome him to South Pine Street. We had the utmost confidence that he would provide patients with the high quality 1-on-1 care that our area has long been starved for. We also knew that being the great communicator that Thomas is, we would be able to easily partner with him and co-treat our amazing patients. Our search for a PT was over, even if he was across the street instead of under the same roof.

We’ve known Thomas and his awesome family on a personal level for years. This naturally led to eventually discussing the idea of him starting a practice in our building for almost as many years. He is a man who we respect on a number of levels and he was a no-brainer first choice to bring in alongside us. The timing for such a move however, was never on the same page at the same time for us.

That changed today. We had no doubt Thomas would succeed in his private practice, but we had no idea how quickly he would grow. Today, Thomas and his team of 3 other talented PTs and PTAs at Philo Physical Therapy joined us at 102 S Pine.

It was a very exciting day. One that has been a long time in the making. We’re so blessed to have such a great group of men and women to practice alongside. Please join us in welcoming them!

The perfect skin routine is hard to find. Countless products are full of toxic ingredients that have reverse effects on the skin.

In this post we will look at three lifestyle tips that could be affecting how your skincare journey is going.

TIP #1
The trend of fat-free diets can deprive our bodies of skin-friendly Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). This deficiency results in chronic itching, dryness, scaling, and thinning. Increasing your intake of omega 3 fatty acids is one way to kick start your skincare routine.

Essential fatty acids are termed “essential” because your body cannot make them from scratch. They must be obtained from food sources.

Foods high in EFA’s include:
- H**p and flax seeds
- Olive oil
- Avocado
- Dark leafy greens
- Eggs
- Fatty fish

TIP #2
Excess intake of alcoholic beverages and certain medications (such as decongestants) can also contribute to dry & dehydrated skin.

TIP #3
Make sure to stay hydrated (drink at least 1/2 of your body weight in ounces of pure water each day).

Previous posts focused on the benefits of PRObiotics. Here we will focus on the benefits of selective PREbiotics; the very powerful counterpart to probiotics.

Selective prebiotic food sources are able to feed only beneficial bacteria. This helps to build up health-promoting bacterial populations.

In turn, another benefit of selective prebiotics is that they do not feed pathogens (unlike some other prebiotics).

To be considered a prebiotic, the food source cannot be digested or absorbed in the stomach or small intestine. It needs to reach the large intestine where it can act as a food source for one or more beneficial bacteria.

Three of our favorite and most studied prebiotics are:
- Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum (PHGG)
- Galactooligosaccharides (GOS)
- Fructooligosaccharides (FOS)

PHGG is derived from guar gum by the process of enzymatic hydrolysis. It is a white powder that is almost tasteless and water-soluble. It is easily mixed in a glass of water or smoothie.

GOSs are found in some foods including all mammalian milk, legumes, Brassica-family vegetables, and pumpkin seeds.

For supplementation, it is derived from lactose by using the enzyme, beta-galactosidase.

FOS is found in over 36,000 plant species, including common vegetables, such as chicory roots, dandelions, garlic, leeks, and rye.

The most common way of supplementing FOS is inulin, which is created by the hot water extraction of fresh chicory roots.

It’s best to be mindful of what prebiotic or prebiotic-like foods you are consuming with each meal. A diet with a diverse range of prebiotic, fibrous foods will result in a healthier and diverse microbiome and a happier, better-functioning you!

Mold can be found in anything with excessive moisture. This is why it is crucial to keep your living conditions dry.

Most people know that mold negatively affects the body, but why are some people more affected by these toxins?

25% of the population has the HLA-DR gene which means they are genetically susceptible to mold.

These people have defenses that are ineffective in clearing mold. This inability to properly break down mycotoxins causes widespread inflammation throughout the body.

This leads to a cyclical inflammatory response that leads to a chronic illness known as CIRS.

People with CIRS often have a number of unexplained symptoms that greatly affect their quality of life.

We often see them after they’ve sought answers from multiple physicians and healthcare practitioners.

The connection between the body and iodine is one that everyone should understand.

Let’s look at what iodine does for the body.

Iodine’s primary job is to supply the thyroid gland with thyroid hormones. When this process is not working correctly, it can be detrimental to not only the thyroid, but the body as a whole.

If iodine is in short supply, tissues in glands such as the thyroid, ovaries, prostate, uterine, and breast tissues can become cystic and lose their structure. When this happens, these tissues can become cancerous.

The people most vulnerable for this iodine deficiency include:
- Pregnant women
- Those who live in areas with iodine-deficient soil
- Those who don’t use iodized salt
- Vegans or vegetarians

Symptoms that may arise when in iodine deficiency include:
- Goiter formation (enlarged thyroid gland)
- Hypothyroidism
- Autoimmune thyroid diseases (Graves’ and Hashimoto’s)

If you suspect or are experiencing these symptoms, it is important to contact a functional medicine practitioner in order to maintain the correct supplementation for your iodine deficiency.

Our Creamy Leek and Cauliflower soup is the PERFECT healthy recipe!

Leeks are rich in flavonoid antioxidants, minerals and vitamins which are a few elements that make leeks a SUPERFOOD!

Leeks help with:
- Weight loss
- Reducing inflammation
- Fighting heart disease
- Lowering blood sugar levels
- Fighting infections

Try out our recipe to enjoy the benefits of these delicious leeks!

Ingredients:
3 organic leeks, light green parts sliced

3 large or 6 small organic carrots, peeled and diced

1 large head or 2 small heads of organic cauliflower, sliced into bite-sized pieces

2 pastured boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cooked and shredded

2 qts. chicken broth

½ c. arrowroot powder (I buy mine here)

2 c. extra broth or water

2 c. full fat coconut milk

3 tbsp. ghee

1-2 tbsp. salt

1/2-1 tsp. pepper

Directions:

Start the soup by melting the ghee in a large stock pot over medium-low heat.

Add the leeks and carrots to the pot and gently sauté for 5 minutes.

Add the cauliflower, chicken and broth.
Turn up to medium-high heat bringing broth to a gentle simmer.

Add coconut milk.

Using a blender bottle or a whisk, combine 2 cups of broth or water with the arrowroot powder.

Pour arrowroot mixture to the pot and stir (all arrowroot powders thicken a little differently; if you notice it is too thin, repeat the process adding ¼ cup of arrowroot).

After soup has thickened (it will take 5-10 min) pull it off the burner and add salt and pepper to taste.

Enjoy!

While mold itself is not a new problem, the dangers of it are unfolding in more recent years. It is becoming apparent that many symptoms have mold as an underlying cause.

In our practice, we work with many people who have had mold exposure. While it is very important to ensure a clean environment and help a person detox out mycotoxins from mold exposure, it is also important to consider possibilities of current and future exposures.

Individuals who have a tendency to be sensitive to mold also have an inflammatory immune response that occurs with mold exposures.

One way that people are exposed to mycotoxins is through their diet. In our practice, we encourage our patients, with this type of sensitivity, to follow a low-mold diet.

Foods to AVOID on a low mold diet:
- Sugar or sugar containing foods
- Grains
- Packaged and processed foods
- Mold and yeast containing foods

For a more extensive list, download our low mold diet guide featured in our blog post called, “Low-Mold Diet”.

Overall, eating a low mold diet will greatly increase your ability to keep a mold free lifestyle. In our practice we can help you create a detailed and effective plan to achieve your health goals. It is always important to remember that healing, from the root cause going outward, takes time.

EPIGENETICS is the study of changes in an organism that are caused by changes in GENE EXPRESSION, not changes to the original genetic code.

Gene expression can act as an on or off switch for making proteins. It can increase or decrease the number of proteins made.

This activity produces a PHENOTYPE, which is a characteristic (height, eye color) that can be seen. When talking about autoimmunity, the phenotype may be the presentation of a disease.

While we can’t change our genetics, we CAN help the way our genes are expressed.

Reduce Stress: Meditation can help reduce stress which can prevent autoimmune conditions. Long-term stress can cause permanent damage to cells which can negatively affect how the body functions.

Avoid Toxic Exposures: Start with the basics… Eat organic foods, use non-toxic household and cosmetic products, and make use of a high-quality water filter.

Stop Smoking: Higher gene expression from smoking may be associated with poor cognitive function, structural brain integrity, physical health, and psychosocial health.

Limit Alcohol: Alcohol is able to change gene expression in the brain. These changes are likely responsible for symptoms of alcoholism, such as dependence, tolerance, craving of alcohol, and more extreme, brain damage.

Address Infections: Infections can also play a major role in the initiation of an autoimmune condition. In our practice, we always look for underlying infections that may be contributing to disease processes.

Promote Gut Health: Gut health also plays a role in the immune system development and response, which can affect autoimmune conditions.

Control Blood Sugar: Type I diabetes is an autoimmune condition, and some researchers are also beginning to link Type 2 diabetes to varying levels of autoimmune reactivity.

Reduce Inflammation: A classic sign of autoimmune disease is inflammation and the key to addressing autoimmune disorders is to reduce inflammation. Controlling inflammation through factors like diet, stress management, and sleep are important in the prevention of autoimmune disease.

Inflammation is something that many people experience. Let’s explore the types of inflammation, what causes them, and how to reduce them.

There are two types of inflammation, acute inflammation and chronic inflammation.

Acute inflammation is a rapid response that lasts just a few hours or days. This type of inflammation eliminates harmful invaders and repairs or removes damaged cells.

A few symptoms of acute inflammation include:
- Pain
- Heat
- Swelling
- Redness
- Fever

Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, also has a rapid response, but instead lasts for months or years. Failure of the immune response to handle the source of inflammation may result in damage to tissues.

Some symptoms of chronic inflammation include:
- Fatigue
- Mood change/depression
- Weight gain
- Rashes
- Autoimmune conditions
- Poor muscle recovery
- Fevers
- Pain

Chronic inflammation can be treated by eliminating the root cause. Making dietary changes, treating possible infections, and identifying any autoimmune conditions is important for decreasing inflammation.

If you think you may be experiencing inflammation, there is hope! In our practice we help to identify the root causes of inflammation and suggest ways to keep inflammation and pain under control.

There are a number of anatomical issues that cause infertility among females. Anatomical issues account for about 40% of the reasons women in developed countries are infertile.

When addressing infertility, anatomical reasons should always be explored and ruled out or addressed first.

Some of these anatomical reasons include:

- Tubal abnormalities
- Endometriosis
- Uterine myomas/fibroids
- Pelvic Adhesions
- Congenital uterine anomalies

In this new article about infertility, we cover a multitude of reasons for infertility and what can be done about them.

Dr. Ryan was born and raised in nearby North Coventry, but fell in love with the Elverson area attending church in the area as a youth.

Now, after earning his Bachelor of Science in Pre-Med Studies at Liberty University and his Doctorate of Chiropractic at Palmer College of Chiropractic, he and his family of five have returned to Pennsylvania to serve the communities in and around Elverson, PA.

Dr. Ryan originally intended on attending medical school to pursue a career in orthopedics. This career path changed however, when he met his wife, Abigail, who came from a family with deep roots in Chiropractic.

While attending Liberty University, he was able to learn under the guidance and observation of one of Abigail’s brothers, who was a Chiropractor in the area of Lynchburg, VA.

It was here that Dr. Ryan was given his first glimpse of a holistic approach to health.

It was more than enough to ignite a passion for pursuing a side of healthcare that was natural, non-invasive, and preventive in nature.

It was during his time at Palmer College that Dr. Ryan began to pursue a deeper understanding in the areas of functional movement and the relationships between different muscle groups to supplement what he was learning regarding the immense implications that the spine has on one’s overall health.

He became Full Body Certified in Active Release Techniques (ART), Proprioceptive-Deep Tendon Reflex (P-DTR), Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), as well as other techniques in order to have powerful tools to treat muscle and other soft tissue dysfunctions.

He has since gone on to study a number of additional techniques, all of which have proved to be extremely useful and complementary to the chiropractic adjustments.

04/26/2022

We have talked in earlier posts about the Epstein-Barr Virus and how it affects the thyroid.

The Epstein-Barr Virus is a virus that directly falls underneath the herpes family.

It's estimated that around 90% of the human population has had EBV.

EBV never truly goes away. Even after symptoms subside (or don’t, some people do not have symptoms with initial EBV infection) the virus usually becomes inactive.

The virus can then be reactivated through triggers such as: stress, thyroid disease, hormonal imbalances, other infections, and/or poor diet.

If EBV does become reactivated it can cause many health issues. These can include, but are not limited to:
- Anemia
- Autoimmune conditions
- Poor immune health
- Thyroid disease
- Certain types of cancer

The best way to prevent chronically activated EBV is to improve your own immune health. The overall health of the body is dependent upon everything functioning properly.

If a few processes or systems are malfunctioning, it impacts overall immune health.

That is why a functional-based approach works well with chronic EBV. Looking at root issues (or dysfunctions) allows the body to work healthily as a whole.

In our practice, we look to address root causes. We aspire to help you reach your health goals through a natural and holistic approach.
