June is Cataract Awareness Month. Inside our eyes, we have a natural lens that bends light in order to let us see things in focus. As we age, the lens typically becomes cloudy, which can impact the clarity of our vision. That cloudy lens is a cataract.

Once the vision is impacted to a significant degree, cataract surgery can be considered. In cataract surgery, the cataract is removed, and a clear artificial lens is implanted into the eye. This outpatient procedure is usually safe and effective.

Dr. Fishkin is an expert cataract surgeon. He is pleased to offer his patients the latest advances in cataract surgery, including special artificial lenses that correct astigmatism and difficulty with reading vision at the same time as the surgery.

BERGEN MAGAZINE NAMES DR. FISHKIN AS TOP OPHTHALMOLOGIST IN BERGEN COUNTY

In the February 2017 issue of Bergen Magazine, released today, Dr. Fishkin was named the top ophthalmologist in Bergen County. Bergen Magazine commissioned Professional Research Services of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of thousands of practicing and active physicians across the county. Doctors were asked to select peers whom they deem are the best within their practice areas and whom they would seek out for particular procedures. All the final honorees were fact-checked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. Six ophthalmologists were chosen for this honor by Bergen Magazine, and Dr. Fishkin was designated as #1 in this group.

Dr. Fishkin has been included in (201) Magazine's 'Top Doctors' issue for 2016. Physicians were chosen based on indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement, as well as a review by a blue ribbon panel. The selection was done in conjunction with the 2016 edition of 'Super Doctors of Bergen County'.

June is Cataract Awareness Month. Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. If not treated, cataracts can lead to blindness. In addition, the longer cataracts are left untreated, the more difficult it can be to successfully remove the cataract and restore vision. Once a year, the American Academy of Ophthalmogy holds its major national meeting where ophthalmologists from across the country have the opportunity to come together and keep up with all the latest findings. August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. As you prepare your children for the beginning of the new school year, make sure you're not neglecting their eye health. Many children aren't aware they have a visual problem, since they assume that everyone sees the world the way they do. One in four school-age children have some form of vision problem. Since more than 80% of early learning is visual, it's extremely important to pick up visual problems as early as possible.

Dr. Fishkin has customized his pediatric eye exam to obtain a large amount of information about a child's visual system in a minimum amount of time, and with no discomfort. Most of the time, no eye drops are necessary. Children often look forward to their visits in our office, as they experience the eye exam as a series of "games" they play with the doctor.
