Since 2008, Rob Clausen, has served as the non-denominational Chaplain / Spiritual Care Coordinator for Hand In Hand Hospice. However, he has thirty years of Hospice experience under his belt.

To know Rob, is to love Rob. He is an engaging and dynamic speaker, who has a wonderful quick-wit, self-depreciating sense of humor.

While having a fun-loving side, he also has a serious side. His “why” for working in Hospice is to help others.

“I love being able to be present for people at a difficult time,” he said.

When he hears the word Hospice, he thinks of comfort. “Somebody being there when you need them.”

He also enjoys, “Seeing the light go on in people’s heart when it comes to a relationship with God.”

His colleagues describe him as someone who is both reliable and fun to work with.

“Rob brightens every room he enters, he brings so much charisma to our team" said Andrea Elwood, Director of Hand In Hand Hospice. “He can also be serious and can be a wonderful support for our patients and their loved ones.”

Originally from Burke, South Dakota he is an alumnus of the University of Sioux Falls. He received his Master of Divinity from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City.

After obtaining his Seminary degree, he served as Associate Pastor at churches in Michigan, South Dakota, and Colorado. He was the main Pastor in Pueblo, Co for eight years before coming to Emporia.

In addition to his role at Hand In Hand, he serves as the Pastor at the First Baptist Church, which he began in 2007.

Outside of work, he enjoys hunting and fishing, drinking coffee with friends, and loves to play golf. An unusual fact about Rob is he is an experienced Beekeeper.

His biggest inspiration is his Mom and his favorite quote is, “We are all in this together.”

“Shine” by Collective Soul is his favorite song, because it brings him serenity.

“I'm gonna let it shine,
I'm gonna let it shine.
Heaven's little light gonna shine on me,
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah,
Heaven's little light gonna shine on me.”

November is recognized as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of hospice and palliative care services and to honor the professionals who provide them.

Below is a story about a strong woman whose husband and sister both utilized Hospice services.

Hand In Hand Hospice was not Nancy Bell’s first encounter with Hospice. While she was living in Emporia, her parents were living in Oklahoma City. A different company provided Hospice services for her Dad.

“I didn’t think there could have been anyone better than the Hospice we used in Oklahoma, but Hand In Hand Hospice did everything the other Hospice did, plus an extra one hundred little things more. Everyone was so knowledgeable on what was going on with both Ron and my sister, Dolores.”

One of the common misconceptions about Hospice is that it automatically means the patient will be passing away within a few days.

“When my husband came on Hospice, he thought he had a very limited amount of time left. However, he was able to stay on services from the spring of 2005 to after Christmas in 2005,” she said. “With my sister, Dolores, she had Hospice intermittently at first, but once her disease progressed, she ended up staying on Hospice the last couple years of her life.”

Nancy appreciates some of the “extras” that Hand In Hand Hospice provided.
“Each staff member gave a little of themselves each time they came to visit. Not just to Ron or Dolores, but also to me. They made me feel like I mattered in all of this. With my sister, they always asked me how I was doing. No matter what I asked for, they always took care of it. Stephany, Taryn, Rob, and Bethany – there are not enough words to say how I feel about how much they helped us.”

Nancy has advice for a patient, or their loved one, who might be reluctant to start on Hospice services.

“You shouldn’t think twice, because you couldn’t have better care than the Hand In Hand Hospice family,” she said. “Not just for the patient in need, but they also provide care for their loved ones. There are so many reasons why I would recommend Hand In Hand Hospice.”

“If I had my life to live over...Someone asked me the other day if I had my life to live over, would I change anything. My answer was no, but then I thought about it and changed my mind.

If I had my life to live over again I would have talked less and listened more.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy and complaining about the shadow over my feet, I'd have cherished every minute of it and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was to be my only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.

I would have eaten popcorn in the "good" living room and worried less about the dirt when you lit the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would have burnt the pink candle that was sculptured like a rose before it melted while being stored.

I would have sat cross-legged on the lawn with my children and never worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television ... and more while watching real life.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband which I took for granted.

I would have eaten less cottage cheese and more ice cream.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick, instead of pretending the Earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for a day.

I would never have bought ANYTHING just because it was practical/wouldn't show soil/ guaranteed to last a lifetime.

When my child kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now, go get washed up for dinner."

There would have been more I love you’s ... more I'm sorry’s ... more I'm listening’s ... but mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute of it ... look at it and really see it ... try it on ... live it ... exhaust it ... and never give that minute back until there was nothing left of it.”
