This has been a very difficult time for so many of us. My friends in the entertainment industry stood still for 5 months. Others are searching for jobs in arenas that are saturated. Some struggle with children getting them to understand that school is no longer an optional zoom experience where they...

SHIFT HAPPENS! It is the time of year when many turn the page and begin a new chapter. It can become overwhelming to navigate the high and low tides. Therapy can help. It is not just for depression or anxiety. It is for a change of life or lifestyle. It is for a move to a new town or new job. It is for finding the definition of a relationship. It is for families or couples or individuals who are looking for a better way. It is giving yourself the opportunity to add new tools to your toolshed of life that allows you to work through your issues. SHIFT HAPPENS! Hop on the wave.

Same crisis every year!
Yep - your kids are stuck wriggling through Algebra 2. I seem to go on this diatribe at least once a year but now during finals it seems once again to be appropriate. Only 5% of the working population of the world requires any knowledge of Algebra 2. (Georgetown Univeristy Study requested by The National Center for Education and Economy, NCEE). Why are we so antiquated that we cannot change curriculum? Your kids are in a panic - might have summer school looming and for what? All about Algebra 2, a math course that has no application to their real life? Parents, teachers, administrators . . . get with the program and change the program. Teach these kids something that actually might be of mathematical value like how to unit price at a supermarket, how to use an ATM card, how to read a recipe and cut it in half. We are not helping our kids by forcing them into the albegra torture chamber. Time for a change.

I am not a fan of New Years' resolutions. I am a fan of daily resolutions . . . the kind that you can actually keep. Like actually getting up in time to go to the gym or even just stretch a bit at home, eating better - easy because that means not necessarily DOING something - it means NOT eating something, working to the best of your ability and taking pleasure and pride in that. The new year offers an opportunity to turn a corner, not necessarily make a whole new road map. Take time to breathe. Take time to think about someone you may not have thought about in a long time and perhaps get in touch. Take time to do something for someone else. Give back and you will get back. Try to turn the thoughts of the impossibile to the daily open door of possibility. These are things we can do. Take the macrocosm of a new year and turn it into the microcosm of a new day. We can do that.

When your friends become grandparents . . . something happens. They are obsessed like never before. I thought watching us all have children was the major SHIFT but no . . . this is. Those perfect little babies . . . until they scream or cry and then you get to hand them back to their parents. It is apparently wonderful. Grandparents get the glory moments and then the handoff. and I love the gloating. Well, why shouldn't they gloat. They made their kids and their kids made a little version of those kids. Biology is just amazing all the time. I am thrilled for my friends and their growing families. I just don't feel like I am ready for someone to call me Granny, or Nanny or whatever the term will be. In my head we are all still teenagers laughing at the same jokes, talking about the same cute boys. In fact, we are as proven by a recent get together. So listen up son (my married child). Not yet. While I am sure it will be so wonderful, I have to get my head in the game. Will let you know when I grow up.
