This morning, I got up early to go outside for a walk around my neighborhood here in Shanghai, and as usual, saw people outside practicing Tai Ji Quan and Eight Brocade Qi Gong together in the park. The sound of singing birds, all the lush greenery and trees, the fresh air, and the slow, gentle, meditative movements reminded me how great it feels and how important it is to slow down the pace of life sometimes and just observe and live in the moment. My walk ended up being a slow, meandering 2 hour long walk through my neighborhood, discovering places I've never been to before even though I've been to this city and lived here for so many years!

This year, we welcome in the Wood Snake, which begins on February 29, 2025 and ends on February 16, 2026. Snakes are known to be wise, charming, elegant, and mysterious creatures. Compared to the more energetic and glitzy persona of the Dragon, a Snake (born in the years 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025) has a more subtle charm and secretive nature.
The Snake has a strong Fire element, so it may indicate a more chaotic time going into the year ahead. Things that were once hidden will now come to the surface, and boundaries will be pushed. However, we can take advantage of the snake’s more cautious, observant nature to reflect and re-evaluate old strategies or decisions before making the next move. Better to be safe than sorry!

Some traditions to help reign in good fortune, long life, and prosperity into the New Year include:
1. Visit a temple to make offerings to the deities and ward off bad luck.
2. Light Firecrackers and wear or decorate with the color red:
Wearing red clothing, setting firecrackers or making loud noise, and hanging red banners on houses have become a traditional way of warding off evil spirits and influence in the coming New Year.
3. Prepare and eat foods that represent good luck, prosperity, and long life, such as:
Cakes and puddings: The word for cake or pudding in Chinese is “gao,” but it also sounds exactly like “tall.” Thus, Chinese people eat daikon rice cakes, for instance, to represent growth, success, or improvement.
Steamed fish: The word fish, or “Yu,” in Chinese sounds the same as the word for “surplus” even though the characters are written differently. Thus, steamed fish is almost always part of the New Year celebration feast.
Noodles: Long noodles symbolize a long, healthy life, so we call them “long life noodles.”
Dumplings: The shape of Chinese dumplings resembles that of golden ingots, so they symbolize wealth and prosperity.
Sweet rice dumplings: These represent harmony and reunion with loved ones.
We hope everyone has a wonderful, festive New Year! Gong Hei Fat Choy! #恭喜发财 !🧧🎉🥳

Happy Chinese Lunar Year, the year of the wood Dragon! In Chinese culture, families go to great lengths to secure dragon babies, for it is believed that babies born in this year are destined for good fortune and greatness. The Dragon Year is characterized by movement, creativity, productivity, and strength. The introspective wood element of this Dragon Year has a tempering effect, helping to keep check on the fiery, sometimes impulsive spirit of the Dragon. With that in mind, I wish you all a prosperous, productive, and creative Dragon year 2024! But make sure to find time for rest, self-care, and introspection as well. 🐉🧧💚.

Happy Winter Solstice! Wishing everyone much peace, love, joy, gratitude, and good health during the holidays and into the New Year! In this email post, we talk about the importance of nourishing kidney yin function during the Winter months, as the kidney is the dominant organ channel at this time of year. Click on the link below to find out what foods are great for supporting kidney yin and yang function. :)

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the season of winter is associated with the kidneys and the yin aspect of nature, which has to do with rest, coolness, and slowing down the pace of life. Besides helping to filter waste from the blood and excess water from the body to maintain fluid balance and regul...

Happy to introduce the opening of my new clinic in Encino, CA! After working 13 years as a full-time acupuncturist on the westside at Traditional Chinese Medicine Healing Center, I finally decided to make the transition into having my own clinic. It's been so wonderful to see some of my long-time loyal patients at my new clinic and to have their support through this uncertain time period, and I've enjoyed meeting all the new patients that had been part of Dr. Linda Zhang's old practice (formerly called Herbalogics) in the valley (she sold her practice to me after 2 years of searching for someone who she felt comfortable selling her practice to). If you have any questions about Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, and what conditions it can help, feel free to send me a message!

A few work selfies from over the years... From the old days back in Shanghai when I was teaching Tai Chi at a corporate conference event, to my time at TCM Healing Center treating couples with fertility challenges.
