Colvard-Kandavel Eye Center Named The Ophthalmologists For The 2026 FIFA World Cup

The Colvard-Kandavel Eye Center The Colvard-Kandavel Eye Center is proud to announce a landmark achievement in our long history of providing world-class vision care. Building on years of experience caring for elite athletes—including professional soccer powerhouses, Los Angeles Galaxy and Angel City FC—we have been selected as the Ophthalmologists for the FIFA World Cup, to be hosted in the United States with matches in Los Angeles in 2026. This honor reflects not only our dedication to cutting-edge ophthalmic care but also the trust we have earned among some of the world's most celebrated athletes.

At the heart of our team are specialists whose expertise spans the full spectrum of eye health. Dr. Justin Dredge, our fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist, brings exceptional skill to our glaucoma and cataract service. Dr. Yoon, our specialty-trained oculoplastic surgeon, provides advanced surgical care for both functional and aesthetic eye and orbital surgeries. Our general ophthalmologists, Dr. Steve Rabinowitz and Dr. Robert Medina, offer comprehensive care that blends meticulous clinical judgment with a personal touch—ensuring that every patient, from professional athlete to community member, receives the highest standard of treatment. Dr. Kandavel continues to perform state-of-the-art cataract surgery and comprehensive consultations. Dr. Dredge and Dr. Kandavel both continue resident education and mission trips throughout the year.

Our physicians are supported by a dedicated, long-term staff whose commitment and warmth have become a hallmark of the patient experience. Their deep knowledge and compassionate approach ensure a smooth and reassuring journey for every patient.

In response to growing demand, we are also proud to share that our clinic will be undergoing a major expansion in 2026. Over the next year, we will be acquiring additional space, outfitted with the latest diagnostic technology and designed to enhance patient comfort. The Colvard-Kandavel Eye Center is honored to celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. Michael Colvard, who passed away last September. Revered worldwide as a pioneering ophthalmologist, gifted educator, and tireless humanitarian, Dr. Colvard devoted more than 30 years to restoring sight and transforming lives. His impact stretched far beyond Encino—deep into rural Africa—where he performed thousands of eye surgeries in the most challenging conditions, giving the gift of sight to those who had long lived in darkness.

His vision for change extended beyond the operating room. Dr. Colvard built enduring partnerships, trained local physicians, and championed education as a path to empowerment. Namibia held a special place in his heart, where he supported schools and programs that offered children not just education, but hope for a brighter future.

In August, the Colvard-Kandavel Eye Center, through its Friends of Vision nonprofit—now lovingly continued under the directorship of the physicians at the center—donated $15,000 to the Mwadinomho Combined School and farm in Namibia. This donation will fund one year of operating budget for the entire school when converted to Namibian dollars.

This gift honors Dr. Colvard’s life’s work while renewing our commitment to carry forward his mission: fostering opportunity, strengthening communities, and extending the transformative reach of vision care and education across Africa. His light continues to guide every step we take.

A Mission Delayed, But Never Forgotten

For more than three decades, Dr. Michael Colvard dedicated himself to restoring sight and hope to underserved communities around the world. His humanitarian work took him to remote villages and small clinics, where his skill and compassion
transformed lives. Over 30 years, he built not just a record of surgeries, but a legacy of service that inspired countless colleagues and friends.

Among those inspired was Dr. Rom Kandavel, who has carried forward this tradition for over 20 years. For 15 of those years, Dr. Kandavel traveled to Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala, performing sight-saving surgeries for those with no access to modern eye care. In more recent years, he has continued this mission in Sinaloa, Mexico, flying by light plane generously donated each year by the Flying Doctors of Mercy to the El Fuerte clinic — a program Dr. Colvard helped establish and personally nurtured.

This year’s planned mission held special meaning. Hoping to join Dr. Kandavel for the first time was Ray Delatorre, our trusted surgical scrub for the planned four-day trip. Ray is not only a skilled technician, but for many years served as Dr. Colvard’s scribe, working side-by-side with him. He witnessed his compassion and surgical excellence firsthand.

Months of planning went into the trip — gathering and packing donated surgical supplies, confirming patients, and preparing for back-to-back surgery days. But in March, due to heightened security concerns tied to U.S. border policies, the mission was abruptly canceled. It was a heartbreaking setback, knowing the work, generosity, and preparation that had gone into making it possible.

These challenges are not new. Just two years ago, Dr. Colvard traveled with Dr. Kandavel and his son, only to be denied entry upon arrival at a Gulf of Mexico regional airport. They were detained for six hours, pressured to pay a bribe, and ultimately turned away — another mission lost to circumstances beyond their control.

Yet the commitment remains unshaken. We are fully dedicated to returning to El Fuerte in March of next year. The clinic continues to operate year-round with two surgical microscopes donated by our team three years ago, which remain in
excellent working condition and have provided sight-saving surgery to hundreds in our absence. Our return will replenish vital supplies, provide fresh surgical expertise, and renew the spirit of this mission for years to come.

Dear Patients,

We hope this letter finds you well. At the Colvard-Kandavel Eye Center, we are always looking for ways to bring the latest advancements in eye care to our patients. We’re pleased to share information about an exciting new treatment option for patients with mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma: the iDose® implant.

What is iDose?
iDose is a tiny, innovative implant that delivers long-term medication (travoprost) directly inside the eye to help lower intraocular pressure. The medication is delivered consistently for up to 36 months. The iDose is designed to reduce or even eliminate the need for daily glaucoma eye drops, making glaucoma management simpler and more consistent.

Why consider iDose?
• Continuous drug delivery: iDose releases travoprost, a common glaucoma drop, steadily over time, helping to maintain stable eye pressure.

• Convenience: Reduces or eliminates the need for daily eye drops.

• Proven safety: In clinical trials, iDose has demonstrated a strong safety profile and has been well tolerated by patients.

• Versatile treatment: It can be implanted as a standalone procedure or combined with cataract surgery, making it a great option for patients undergoing cataract removal, and it can be combined with the lens of your choice. iDose can also be combined with other Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgeries (MIGS) such as iStent infinite to further enhance the glaucoma treatment.

• Effective treatment: Dr. Kandavel and Dr. Dredge were honored to participate in the FDA studies which led to the approval of iDose. As a result they are amongst the most experienced surgeons in the nation with this new technology. In those trials iDose was found to reduce pressure by up to 10 mmHg and up to 70% were medication free at 2 years.
