Harmony in Parenting - A Psychology Center, Inc.

Harmony in Parenting - A Psychology Center, Inc. At Harmony in Parenting (HIP) we understand that parenting has its stressors, which can also impact how we connect and respond to our children.

Therapy and consultation support is provided to children, adults, families, and schools seeking support in building resiliency, while addressing current challenges. Our goal is to help parents gain awareness of the barriers to finding peace and to help parents make shifts toward change, to ultimately help their child succeed. We have noticed as parents begin to embrace where they are, they become more mindful of their needs, attuned to the needs of their child, and feel more confident in their role as parent.

It is often so hard to remember this in the midst of a tantrum with your toddler or an argument with a spouse. It is also so hard to notice this for ourselves. Yet noticing this can be the first step in addressing true needs.

It's important to hug your kids and show them affection when they misbehave or act out because it can help them calm down and feel better.

Parenting includes not just raising our children, but ourselves too.

Empathy is actually a complex skill. Having empathy requires that we can see ourselves separate from someone else. It means that we can understand that other people have different thoughts and feelings. We also need to understand and recognise common feelings such as happy, sad, angry, scared in ourselves and others. Then on top of these we need to be able to imagine how a person may feel in different situation and have some insight in what to do to help. When we really think about it, that is a lot to know. There is some research that children begin to have understanding of people's feelings from the age of about 2 years of age. But the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes in not fully developed till about 5 years of age.

Thank you for this post: “Usually as researchers we focus on what parents can do to foster their children’s development. We loved how this study turned this idea on its head and looked at how children benefit their fathers.⁣

The results are based on a set of three studies that took slightly different approaches to researching how fathers’ life satisfaction, well-being, and happiness are linked to the time they spend with their kids. The combined total sample across the three studies was more than 18,000 dads (an impressive and enviable sample size!).⁣

Two caveats to note here:⁣

1️⃣ These results are correlational. Fathers who feel less stressed to begin with are more likely to find spending time with their children to be fulfilling.⁣

2️⃣ The families in the studies were heterosexual two-parent families. Although there is a push to include diverse family structures in research, there is still a long way to go!”

And intentional control of behaviors and emotions just BEGINS to emerge at 3 1/2 to 4 years old. It continues for the next two decades! Let’s be mindful of a developmental framework that doesn’t require more from children then they are able to produce.❣️Thanks ZERO TO THREE

Lovely infographic to help in addressing nighttime anxiety.

New Series of infographics - “Why Do Kids Do That?”

Young kids are allergic to separation which routinely shows up at bedtime. There are many reasons for this which makes it one of the toughest times of the day for a young child (and their parents!). Young kids can cling to us out of protest and alarm, refuse to sleep thus leading to bedtime battles and tears.

There is a way through and it starts by making sense of why this time is so hard. From insight we lead into practice, working at the roots of the distress rather than just tackling behaviour at the surface level.

There are so many ways we can help them settle into sleep and to hold onto us when apart.

For more ways to bridge the nighttime separation see my other infographic - “When Saying Goodnight is Hard”

Our Story

At Harmony in Parenting (HIP) we provide guidance to parents and school staff in order to build children up for success. By gaining awareness of the barriers and helping parents and schools make shifts toward change, we have noticed children feel more at ease, are more attuned to, and grow up to be successful in their lives.

HIP has been co-founded by two psychologists, Dr. Rosalie Finer and Dr. Azine Graff. They bring their decades of expertise in helping children and their families address barriers to academic and social success along with happiness. They consider individual and family needs, whether they are providing support in the form of therapy, groups, or consultations to schools.
