The vagus nerve is the main nerve of your parasympathetic (“rest & digest”) nervous system. It runs from your brainstem down through your neck, heart, lungs, and into your gut.

When your vagus nerve is active:
• Your breath slows
• Your heartbeat slow down
• Your muscles soften
• Your mind feels calmer

In yoga, slow breathing practices typically use:
• nasal breathing (breathing in and out of nose)
• longer, slower exhales

This tells your brain: I am safe. ❤️

When your brain feels safe, it activates the vagus nerve, which slows your heart rate and relaxes your body.

Examples in yoga:
• belly breathing
• extended exhale breathing
• sighing breaths
• alternate nostril breathing
