The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison. - Ann Wigmore

This may seem backwards, but what if we thought of symptoms as a blessing? Really! As frustrating as they may be, what if health problems had NO symptoms? That is a scary thought! We would have no idea if something is wrong or not and if we should seek help! Not that we should run to doctor every time something "seems off," but our bodies are really good at telling us that our health may need to be addressed. So listen to your body, trust your gut, and thank your symptoms!

Seriously though, scales are NOT the way to go when gauging progress. Rather than fixating on a number, ask yourself questions like these: Do I feel better? Do my clothes fit differently? Do I have more energy? You see what I mean. I promise you, if you are taking steps towards healthier living, and even if you just made one tiny positive change to your diet/lifestyle this week, progress is being made! It's not about weight LOST, but health GAINED.

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change. - Jim Rohn.

"Fast food equals fiber-less food." Robert H. Lustig, MD. In scanning the entire list of McDonalds menu items nutrition facts, the highest fiber option I found was a salad that had 7 grams. All other items averaged 3 grams or lower. The average adult male needs between 30 and 38 grams of fiber every day while the average adult female needs 25 grams. So assuming that you don't get a salad at McDonalds, you still have another 22 - 35 grams of fiber to go in order to meet your daily requirement. Reason #285 why we won't gain anything by eating fast food. Facebook told me to not post the other 284 reasons because I was "ranting" and needed to "calm down."

I hope everyone has a chance to get outside and get some vitamin D today! Live in Binghamton where sunshine is a rarity? No worries! Fish, dairy, and eggs are not only great sources of protein, but they are also high in vitamin D. Win win!

Anyone do the Color Run today? Lots of respect from me if you did! Running is easily my least favorite form of exercise. I will take it up if there's, you know, a bear or avalanche or something. Don't get my wrong, I really do enjoy working out. But running is not part of my routine. Why? Because I don't like it. It's that simple. And I honestly think fitness should be that simple. Is exercise going to be enjoyable for everyone? Unfortunately, no. But it doesn't have to be torture either. Remember, we are looking for sustainability. You're not going to stick with a routine that you hate!

Never underestimate the effect food has on children. "Junk food causes junk behavior and junk learning." - Dr. Bill Sears

Anyone else think they are immune to the negative side effects of the chemicals and toxins lurking in the Standard American Diet? Been there. I lived in artificial sweetener denial for a LONG time. But just because you feel fine now doesn't mean that a steady stream of junk going into your system isn't adding up to bigger problems down the road. It is never too late though! There is no time like the present to take control of your health! So what is in your kitchen right now that deserves a second look? You might be surprised at what is hiding in there (I know I certainly was when I hauled out my kitchen recently).
