A Happy Holiday Starts with Safety.

In 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported 10 deaths and an estimated 154,700 emergency department-treated injuries associated with toys for children 12 years and younger. December is National Safe Toys and Gifts Month, and HCA HealthONE Swedish wants to share essential tips to protect the young ones in your life.

Key Toy Safety Tips:
Check Labels: Always look at labels for age and safety recommendations.

Mind Small Parts: For children under 4, avoid toys with small parts which can be a choking hazard. A toilet paper roll can be used to determine if a toy is too small.

Avoid Hazards: Avoid button batteries and magnets. Children can swallow these items, which can cause serious injury.

Gear Up: Always include protective gear when gifting bikes, skates, scooters, and other riding toys.

Stay Informed: Stay aware of toy recalls through the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Meet Jesse Ellis, RN, a recent recipient of The DAISY Award, nominated by his grateful patient, Geri M.

Geri, 82, had debilitating pain and lost some of her "tech skills" while recovering from surgery. Not only did Jesse provide the best clinical care, managing her severe nerve pain immediately and without delay, but he also went above and beyond: he patiently taught her how to forward text messages so she could easily connect with her family.

"The world needs more RNs like Jesse," says Geri. "I value the time he cared for me, the wisdom he shared, and the wonderful care he gave me."

We are so proud of Jesse for showing that compassion and human connection are key to great nursing.
