New research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that up to 32% of dementia cases in older adults can be linked to hearing loss.

At first glance, hosting a silent movie night to support a speech and hearing center might seem a little ironic — even confusing. And when we say "𝑠𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑔𝑜𝑙𝑑𝑒𝑛...𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑜𝑛𝑙𝑦 𝑖𝑓 𝑖𝑡'𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑖𝑐𝑒," it’s more than just a clever tagline. It’s a reminder.

For many of us, choosing to enjoy a silent film is just that — a choice. For others in our community, silence isn’t optional. Whether born deaf or experiencing hearing loss later in life, some of our neighbors navigate a world where 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 movie is silent.

That’s why we host Silent Nite on the Town — not just for the laughs and nostalgia (though there’s plenty of both), but to raise essential funds for speech therapy, hearing aids, screenings, and hearing protection. These services help preserve and support communication in all its forms — spoken, signed, amplified, or assisted — and offer care that meets people where they are.

So come laugh with us, eat some popcorn, win a raffle prize or two… and maybe, between the piano plinks and silent-era slapstick, take a moment to appreciate your own hearing. Protect it. Check it. Value it.

Because silence may be golden — but it should always be your choice.
