It's World Diabetes Day. Did you know diabetes affects an estimated 800 million people worldwide? This chronic disease requires proactive management, and the power to change outcomes is often in our hands!
Dr. Emily Sheahan, MD, a Primary Care Provider at Wallowa Memorial Medical Clinic, shares this important message:
“Diabetes is growing at an an alarming rate, but with healthier lifestyle choices, including a high fiber diet and regular activity, you can reduce the risk of developing diabetes as well as successfully treat this chronic disease.”
3 Simple Ways to Reduce Risk & Manage Diabetes:
1. Stay Active: Aim for 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity. If you can talk but not sing, you're at the perfect level!
2. Focus on Fiber: Eating high-fiber foods (vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans) helps slow the uptake of sugar into your bloodstream. It's vital for steady blood glucose levels!
3. Choose Healthy Fats: Reduce saturated fats (solid at room temperature like butter and cheese) and increase healthy monounsaturated/polyunsaturated fats found in foods such as avocado, nuts, and seeds.
Remember to monitor your health! Chronically elevated blood sugar can lead to serious damage (vision changes, neuropathy, kidney failure, and heart attack/stroke). If you have risk factors (family history, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet), schedule regular vision and foot checks, and lab evaluations.
