Some mornings I wake up already heavy.
After just a few hours of sleep following a birth, I reach for my phone before I’ve even found my footing, and the news rushes in. I cry.
So much turmoil. So much noise. So much grief moving through our country and across the world.
Being a midwife is inseparable from social justice.
It is rooted in the belief that women deserve autonomy, dignity, and the right to make choices about their own bodies and lives. These are rights that are still so often threatened, even here, even now, in this beautiful place we call free.
And yet.
Last night, with the same eyes that cried over the news this morning, my heart cracked open in the best possible way.
A mother, who is now my friend, delivered her baby with such joy and pride - completely elated with how her birth unfolded. Many times I heard her say, "This feels like a dream."
In that moment, utterly exhausted and completely present, I was reminded why I do this work.
It is an incredible honor to witness the ushering in of life.
To hold space at the very beginning.
To watch strength, love, and hope take their first breath.
Despite the heaviness.
Despite the fear.
Despite the fatigue.
There is still good in this world.
I must believe there is still hope.
Babies are my hope.
Stay tuned for those birth photos. 💛💛
This sweet baby was born almost two months ago. He is the fourth baby I have had the honor of midwifing for this family, who have also since become dear friends, and he was another beautiful and awe inspiring joy to behold. He was her biggest baby yet. Scroll to see just how big!
With my smaller practice right now, just 2 to 6 births per month, I have been deeply prayerful and intentional, manifesting what I can to help bring my clients’ birth visions into reality. It does not always unfold exactly as imagined, but with so much intention poured into the process, I am constantly amazed by how often those dreams do become real.
And once again, I find myself hopeful that these moments will ripple outward into the future, shaping a gentler, more whole world for our own children.
