It is with great sadness that we share that Allan Lee Barton “Al”, 83, of Loudon, died at home on December 29th, with family by his side.
He was born in Pittsfield on April 24th,1942, the oldest of seven children, to Pauline Stockman Barton and Allan Prescott Barton. He attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from the University of NH in 1964 with a Bachelor’s degree in Dairy Science, and was an active member of the AGR fraternity.
Al married Letty Jean Hunter on June 25th,1966 and they settled on a farm in Loudon they named Ox View Farm. Here they raised their family and lived for the next 57 years. Later in life, they enjoyed traveling together.
Al is survived by his wife Letty, son Timothy Barton (wife Terri) of Loudon, and daughter Jennifer Scarinza (late husband John) of Randolph. He has six grandsons: Fred Currier, Tim Barton, Peter Barton (wife Rachael) Mark Barton (wife Carly), Kevin Barton (wife Olivia) all of Loudon, and Ethan Scarinza of Randolph. His beloved family also includes two great-grandsons (Colton and Bennett) and two great-granddaughters (Blake and Sydney). Al is survived by five siblings: Lewis Barton, Florida; Pat Clattenburg, Pittsfield; Frances Newman, Northwood; Mary Corliss (husband Dick), Barnstead; and Linda Martin, Pittsfield. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Kenneth. He was well loved by his extended family including many nieces, nephews and cousins, most who knew him as “Buster”.
Al was a very hard working man, right from when he was young. He grew up on his family farm, making hay, cutting wood and raising animals. His first job was at the family sawmill, and he continued to make his living through hard physical labor for much of his life. He worked on dairy farms, built log homes, and ran his own business (Hilltop Construction). He served as the Loudon Road Agent, and drove trucks hauling milk and logs. Al was known for his “yankee ingenuity” when it came to fixing things.
Al had a tremendous love for animals; he had many dogs that were very special to him. He raised pigs from a young age. One of his greatest passions was raising and training oxen, which he used at home and pulled at New England fairs. Working with oxen was truly a family activity and he passed this skill on to the next two generations of his family.
Another part of Al’s legacy will be his love of making maple syrup, a tradition continued by his family. Other past times included Tuesday night poker, and coin collecting- he was a life member of the NH Collector’s Club. Allan loved old cars and owned several over the years, including a 1929 Model A, a 1953 Chevy, and a 1957 Chevy Belair.
Al had a wonderful sense of humor and was known for sharing stories and having strong opinions. He was a good man, and his ethics and values are inspiration to his family and friends, who will remember him with love and fondness.
