Erie Homes for Children and Adults, Inc. (EHCA)

Erie Homes for Children and Adults, Inc. (EHCA) EHCA's mission is to assist people with all levels of disabilities to live rich & fulfilling lives. DISCOVER THE EHCA DIFFERENCE
What is the EHCA difference?

We believe it is our ongoing story of compassion-in-action. All services are personalized to meet the needs of the individual, and we specialize in providing care for those who are also considered medically fragile. Through a unique program aimed at reducing the incidence of developmental disabilities, EHCA also helps women with at-risk pregnancies deliver healthy babies and assists needy families to create stable home environments. Each day, our goal is to contribute to the health, development, and fulfillment of every person placed in our care. Since its founding in 1912, the agency has grown to include 18 group homes for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. EHCA’s six community programs offer opportunities and support services for individuals with disabilities who reside with family members or on their own. Today, EHCA makes a difference in the lives of over 400 people and their families each day in Erie, Crawford, and Venango counties. Our facilities and services have changed through the years to meet evolving community needs, but our commitment to making a difference in the lives of the region’s most vulnerable residents has never wavered. OUR HISTORY
The story begins in Erie on September 26, 1912, when thirteen women gathered in the home of Mrs. Otto Hitchcock to discuss the pressing need to find a home for an infant found abandoned at Union Station. The women formed a board of directors, and over the next two weeks they rented a house at 947 West 7th Street and hired a nurse and house mother to staff the facility. Erie Infants Home and Hospital was born. The object of the new institution was to “provide a temporary home or hospital for needy infants from birth to two years of age.” Local residents donated money and furnishings. Demand for the home’s services quickly became evident: within its first year of operation, more than 80 babies received care. The organization was incorporated in 1913. The need for larger quarters prompted a move to West 11th Street the following year, and in 1916 the board of directors purchased a house on East 26th Street. During World War I, the small staff and board volunteers cared for many children there whose families were unable to provide for them. A new home/hospital was built on adjacent property in 1927. This building, located at 226 East 27th Street, remains the agency’s main facility. The East 26th Street house became a residence for nurses. During the Great Depression and again during World War II, Erie Infants Home and Hospital served as a refuge for countless children whose families struggled during difficult economic times. By the 1950s, board members saw the need to reevaluate the role of the organization. The home expanded its charter to care for mentally challenged children awaiting admission to Polk State School and Hospital. Erie Infants Home and Hospital began providing educational experiences for each resident in the early 1970s. The agency’s commitment to helping each person reach his/her highest potential was an emerging concept. In 1972, the agency changed its name to Erie Infants Home. In the 1980s, the purchase of two houses for providing residential care demonstrated the agency’s emerging vision of providing more home-like settings. By 1983, another name change was needed. Erie Infants and Youth Home more accurately described the residents the agency served. The infants were growing up. Rapid growth and change in the 1990s made it apparent that the agency had again outgrown its name. Erie Homes for Children and Adults (EHCA) better reflected the range of people served by the agency as well as the expanded services provided. The progressive spirit of EHCA’s founders continues into the new millennium. Today, the agency offers programs in four Pennsylvania counties and provides supports to over 350 individuals and their families through its 17 group residences and six community-based programs every day. EHCA employs nearly 500 people in positions ranging from direct support professionals and nurses to program specialists and family service providers. As a private nonprofit organization, EHCA depends not only on governmental funding and the commitment of its staff but also on community volunteers and the generous support of individual and corporate donors.

Congratulations to our very own Christian Thayer on his Student of the Month achievement! We're proud of his hard work and his deep dedication to everything he does. He chose to go back to school, not only for himself but to go further for those he serves here at EHCA. We're incredibly lucky to have him!

We are to announce Christian Thayer as our March 2026 Student of the Month at NPRC. Thayer is one of the latest examples of a student changing their life and brightening their future. A resident of Titusville, Thayer works full-time for the Erie Homes for Children and Adults (ECHA) at the Crawford County group homes as a program specialist and is using what he’s learning in the classroom to better serve those in need of support.

“EHCA’s mission was the type of work I felt my calling to be,” noted Thayer. “We try to provide a family-living structure, where we take care of people while promoting independence as much as possible. The thing I love most about my job is that I get to have genuine relationships with the individuals we take care of. It is like having an extended family. I enjoy getting to take the individuals out into the community for fun events, and we help them develop and maintain relationships with their friends and employers.”

Thayer began his time as an NPRC student in August 2025, enrolling in in-person, remote synchronous, and remote asynchronous courses before determining that the in-person option was the best fit for him. “This is my first time in college, and so far, my experience with NPRC has exceeded my expectations. I really enjoy the ability to have several options for attending classes. During my first semester, I did all three options, but I determined that the in-person classes were the best for me. NPRC has so many resources available to students, and everyone is graciously helpful.” An associate degree in human services from NPRC will provide Thayer with increased opportunities at work and allow him to better serve those he supports. “When I was looking for schools, I wanted something that was local, and NPRC was the perfect fit for that,” he noted. “It was also very flexible, allowing me to go to school part-time to earn my degree.”

He also earned his way onto the NPRC Dean’s List for the Fall 2025 term, something he says his younger self could not even imagine. “When I was younger, I struggled in school. But throughout this experience in college for the first time, NPRC has been there for me, and I love that. It will take me a few years to earn my degree, but that is at my pace and what I can handle and prefer. It’s awesome that NPRC lets you take it at your own pace and supports you along the way, so I am taking my time to ensure I can handle my career, personal life, and schoolwork along the way.”

Thayer is grateful to his instructors, Mr. Ben Blood and Mr. Brenton Po***ck, as well as his advisor, Laurel Lucas, for making his experience at NPRC enjoyable and making him feel like he belonged here from the start. “Laurel, my advisor, has been fantastic with all the help she has provided me. She was one of the main reasons I signed up for NPRC. When I first went exploring colleges, I talked with Laurel and she was phenomenal. There was no pressure to sign up, and she provided me with all the information I needed. Of all the colleges I had investigated, Laurel and NPRC were the first to invite me in with genuine enthusiasm.”

A perfect opportunity for a local resident who always hoped to go to college, but until now, did not have that perfect fit. But now, Christian Thayer is on his way to achieving even bigger things in human services. “NPRC is my path to earning an associate’s degree in human services, which will open many opportunities for me at the state level. I truly feel my calling is working with people to provide them with the help of living happy and healthy lives. My future goals are working for the state of PA in human services and holding a position at EHCA. When I obtain my degree, I will be very proud because I honestly never thought I would do well or enjoy college. With the support of everyone, I am doing both.”

Keep up the great work, Christian! You are just another reason to be !

We shared with you in October that the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals - NADSP has developed a certification program for DSPs working in community human services, like those employed by EHCA. At that time, we shared our first round of outstanding team members who had completed credentialing.

Credentialing allows our exceptional DSPs and Front Line Supervisors to apply their knowledge and experience in a formal way to get credit for the great things they have already done and continue to do daily. During this rigorous process, they complete additional education hours and use real work experience to show the high-quality level of care they have provided, all while upholding the ethics of the profession.

🎉 Please join us in congratulating the next round of amazing team members who have completed credentialing. We're immensely proud of their commitment to giving their best to individuals with disabilities each day.

(This is not all of them! Stay tuned as we continue to highlight our fantastic rockstars!)
