Allegheny Health Network's Cancer Patient Ambassador program was formed to compliment the clinical expertise of the AHN Cancer Institute with emotional and practical support for newly diagnosed patients.

Now in its second year, the program has grown to include 90 ambassadors providing firsthand insights on the unique challenges of cancer.

The program pairs newly diagnosed cancer patients with volunteer ambassadors who have successfully navigated their own cancer journeys, providing emotional and practical support.

Judy’s been an AHN nurse for 45 years, and late last year it was her turn to be the patient. She had her left knee replaced using Mako technology. Prior to surgery, Judy could barely bend her knee and said her pain was “horrendous.” Now, she walks stairs with ease, can bend her knee 116 degrees and comfortably walked 26,000 steps on her first day back to work!
