Empowering your child with good oral health habits starts early. 🪥

Help young children brush their teeth thoroughly, teaching them to spit out excess toothpaste without rinsing, allowing the remaining toothpaste to protect against decay.

Don't forget to floss once teeth touch.

Regular dental visits and a bedtime brushing routine are crucial.

From birth, establish healthy habits by gently wiping baby's gums with a soft washcloth after feedings and avoiding sugary drinks before bed.

When solids are introduced, opt for healthy choices.

For children under 3, begin brushing with a smear of fluoride toothpaste as soon as teeth appear, and for those aged 3-6, use a pea-sized amount, supervising and guiding their brushing technique.

Indeed, it may seem surprising, but Dental Drill Appreciation Day is real and it’s recognized on January 26th.

While one might assume that only dentists would appreciate dental drills, individuals who have undergone dental procedures can attest to the significance of modern drills in facilitating efficient and swift treatments.

The evolution of dental drills has been remarkable, from primitive 'bow drills' used around 7,000 B.C. to the sophisticated air turbine drills of today.

Notably, the earliest mechanical drills operated at a mere 15 rpm, whereas contemporary drills can reach speeds of over 180,000 rpm.

Key milestones include the development of the clockwork 'Erado' drill by George Fellows Harrington in 1864, the pneumatic drill with pedal-operated bellows by George F. Green in 1868, and the introduction of air turbine technology in the 1950s and 1960s.

Today's drills can reach speeds of up to 800,000 rpm, with 400,000 rpm commonly used for fine work and 40,000 rpm for applications requiring more torque.

Advanced features such as water streams and built-in light sources further enhance their functionality.

In 1901, Frederick McKay, a dental student, set up his practice in Colorado Springs, where he found locals with distorted brown teeth known as Colorado Brown Stain.

Despite initial theories about meat consumption and substandard milk, McKay worked with Dr. G.V. Black to uncover the cause.

They discovered that teeth with calcified deposits were resistant to browning and that affected teeth were resistant to decay.

Further research with chemist H.V. Churchill revealed that high levels of fluoride in the water were the cause.

This discovery led to the understanding that fluoride at safe levels can fight tooth decay.

Today, January 25 is celebrated as Fluoride Day to raise awareness about the effective use of fluoride.

***We understand and respect that there are many varying opinions on fluoride. If it is something you choose to avoid, we are happy to discuss other options with you.

On National Popcorn Day, we want to remind everyone that popcorn's pesky hulls can cause plaque traps, inflamed gums, discomfort, and possibly even cavities.

To celebrate without dental disasters, floss before and after eating, choose easier-to-eat types, and brush and rinse thoroughly.

If you have a water flosser, be sure to use it too.

January marks National Birth Defects Prevention Month (NBDPN), an opportunity to raise awareness about reducing the risks of certain birth defects.

Common congenital anomalies include cleft lips and palates.

Although preventing these defects is not always possible, there are measures that can be taken to minimize the risk.

Key preventive strategies include consuming folic acid daily, avoiding smoking and alcohol consumption, obtaining preconception checkups, maintaining a healthy weight, consulting with healthcare providers about medication safety, and receiving regular prenatal care can contribute to a healthier pregnancy.
