Today feels personal.
As a 37 year old therapist, I spend my days sitting with women who are doing some of the bravest work there is…healing. Healing from the messages our generation of women were handed about who we were supposed to be.
Be smaller.
Be quieter.
Be agreeable.
Don’t take up too much space.
In the therapy room, I watch women slowly reclaim themselves. Finding their voices. Setting boundaries. Learning to trust their instincts again.
And then I go home to my almost 9-year-old daughter.
Raising a girl while witnessing so many women untangle the expectations placed on them is not lost on me. It makes me deeply aware of the world we’re shaping for the next generation.
I hope my daughter grows up knowing her voice matters.
I hope she knows “no” is a complete sentence.
I hope she sees women supporting women, not competing with them.
I hope she learns that strength and softness can exist in the same body.
Being a therapist means I help women heal from what they were taught.
Being a mother means I get to help shape what my daughter learns from the very beginning.
And that feels like the most meaningful work of all.
Happy International Women’s Day to the women healing, the women growing, and the girls who will inherit a world we are still working to make better.
