MDSCAA Senior Companion Program

MDSCAA Senior Companion Program The Senior Companion Program serves Menominee, Delta and Schoolcraft Counties. Their efforts are aimed at helping others live fully independently.

Senior Companion Volunteers add richness to the lives of their clients, while providing access to the community, including grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments and opportunities for socialization. In addition to improving the lives of their clients, Senior Companions find their lives enriched through service to others. Senior Companions serve up to 40 hours each week or an average of four hours a day. The hours are flexible, but most companions are with their clients both morning and afternoons. Senior Companions receive a modest, tax-free stipend to partially offset the cost of volunteering. They are covered by accident and personal liability insurance while serving: receive an allowance for transportation and meals; receive an annual physical exam.

This year, we recognized three remarkable individuals whose long-term dedication and compassion have profoundly shaped our program and community. Each of them has been a part of our volunteer family for many years and has earned the distinguished title of Volunteer of the Year. Their continued service reminds us of what lasting commitment truly looks like.

In Delta County, we have Don Sayklly (far left) who has been volunteering for an impressive 27 years, offering kindness, and unwavering support that have touched countless lives.

In Schoolcraft County, Lois Robbert (middle) has devoted 21 years to our program, sharing her creativity, compassion, and tireless dedication to helping others.

Lastly, in Menominee County, John Berge (far right), with 15 years of service, brings enthusiasm and dedication to everything he does. Always dependable and ready to help.

Together, Don Sayklly, Lois Robbert, and John Berge represent the very best of what our program stands for. Their dedication over the years has not only helped us grow but has touched countless lives along the way. We are deeply grateful for their service, dedication, and the legacy they continue to build through their volunteerism.

The 42nd Senior Companion Program Recognition Banquet went really well. We started with our In Service, and we had a group picture taken (thanks to Janet Draze for taking them). We moved to the Dining room. We had a great lunch of Chicken and meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans with almond slices, and a salad. The Senior Companion Cake for dessert. We had 3 new Volunteers of The year. Don Sayklly, Lois Robbert, and John Berge. Congratulations to each of them for bringing so much to the program. We had Bucket Raffle winners, and Share the Wealth winners. As a gift from the Senior Companion Program, we got a box full of household goodies, which really come in handy. Thank you Volunteers for another great year of your dedication and work as a volunteer. (Oct 15, 2025)

September's Senior Companion Program In Service went well. We shared the wealth, sang Happy Birthday to the September Birthday people, got new shirts, got new Time Sheets for October, and Linda talked about upcoming events. We had Lasagna and Garlic bread for lunch. Next In Service is just before our 42nd Recognition Luncheon at the Casino on October 15th. Hope to see you all there. (Sept 16, 2025)

The Senior Companion Program & Foster Grandparent Program In Service Picnic went really well. We played Bingo and had many prizes to win. We had Share The Wealth, and the Bucket Raffle. For lunch we had Spaghetti & meatballs, Garlic toast, a salad, and for dessert ice cream with any topping you wanted on it. It was a beautiful day for it, and it was great seeing everyone again. Until next time, take care. (July 22, 2025)
