MDSCAA Senior Companion Program

MDSCAA Senior Companion Program The Senior Companion Program serves Menominee, Delta and Schoolcraft Counties. Their efforts are aimed at helping others live fully independently.

Senior Companion Volunteers add richness to the lives of their clients, while providing access to the community, including grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments and opportunities for socialization. In addition to improving the lives of their clients, Senior Companions find their lives enriched through service to others. Senior Companions serve up to 40 hours each week or an aver

age of four hours a day. The hours are flexible, but most companions are with their clients both morning and afternoons. Senior Companions receive a modest, tax-free stipend to partially offset the cost of volunteering. They are covered by accident and personal liability insurance while serving: receive an allowance for transportation and meals; receive an annual physical exam.

The Senior Companion Program's April 2026 In Service meeting went very well. We got to pick out a shirt, Coloring book, and large Crossword Puzzle. Also got this little tablet with paper for notes and sticky notes. We played Share The Wealth (50/50). Then we had the Birthdays for April. Happy Birthday Linda and Terry (Terry's was in March). Linda talked about the time sheets. Make sure we put down the place or city the In Service is being held at. Check your signature to be sure they are on the front and the back. If you are off for awhile, you do not need signatures from your assigned places, while you are off. Sayklly's Easter Candy Sale went well. Terry sold the most, followed by Linda K., and then Frank. Great job Senior Companions!
Remember to look at your calendars. They have a lot of information on them, that can help with filling out your time sheet. If you aren't going to work on any certain, let the office know. We then played a game of “Egg Exchange” with the people from our neighbor table, and won a gift. For lunch we had Pizza from Dominoes. Everything went great and it was great to see everyone. See you next time (April 14, 2026)

The Senior Companion Program In-Service for February went very well. After we signed in, we had assigned seating and had to sit where our large envelopes were. Then we Shared the Wealth with two winners. The February Birthdays came next – Happy Birthday Rose (Feb 21). Linda went over the Senior Companion Evaluations. We had information on Dementia, and Linda talked about that, and had responses from the Senior Companions. We had Chicken from Family Inn (thanks Don), Stuffing, Mashed potatoes, gravy, a salad, and cookies (Thanks to Linda, Elizabeth, Gayle, Mary Lou, and Karen & Bill Castle).
It was great to see everyone again. (Monday Feb 16, 2026)

The January 20th 2026 In Service for the Senior Companion Program went very well. After signing in, we had to find an assigned seat, by locating a large folder with our name on it. This arrangement was for “To Get to know your neighbor” arrangement. We had January Birthdays. Happy Birthday Tori and Bud! We had “Share The Wealth” drawings. Linda talked about School closures due to weather. Remember, even a two hour delay is a closure. Remember, if it's too cold, or unsafe, don't go. But remember to call and let your site or In Home person know you aren't coming.
Also remember to check and follow what's on your calendar.
The Senior Companions got to evaluate the Senior Companion Program.
For lunch we had Meals On Wheels – Salisbury Steak, Mashed potatoes and gravy, and peas and carrots, with bread, apple sauce. Thank you Lydia :) (Tuesday Jan 20, 2026)

The Senior Companion Program's Christmas Party 2025 went really well. Everyone grabbed some raffles for the Share The Wealth and the Bucket drawings. We had the December Birthdays. Lee lead us in prayer before our lunch. For lunch we had Broccoli stuffed Chicken, Swedish meatballs, carrots, Potato wedges, and much more. It was really good. For dessert we had cake. We played Christmas Bingo and won a Christmas Ornament as a prize. We had winners of the Share The Wealth, and the Bucket Drawing. We were given Sea Salt Caramels. Linda told us that we sold over $6,000 in the Sayklly's Christmas Chocolates sale. Terry sold the most, Bill the second, and Frank the third. Great job Senior Companions!
Just before we drove home, we stopped by and were given a box of Meats. Reminder, be sure to get your Time Sheet in before December 22.
Merry Christmas Senior Companions! The Senior Companion Program appreciates all you do. May you each have a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year! 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

HAPPY SENIOR COMPANION DAY!

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the many Senior Companion volunteers throughout the State of Michigan for their dedication, compassion, and determination to make the day much brighter with a visit for those living alone, facing loneliness/depression, socially isolated, disabled, caregivers needing respite, or someone who needs a friend.

You do amazing things for others, and we are beyond proud of the service and care you provide to them. You are making a huge difference to the hearts of these individuals, right along with our own hearts. You are the reason the Senior Companion Program is a success.

We are extremely thankful for such a wonderful group of volunteers! Make sure you pamper yourself today and enjoy this special day you certainly deserve!

November's In Service in 2025 went really well. We had Share The Wealth. Linda talked about the Holiday hours. Remember, on the days we take off for Holidays, we get the same hours we would have, had we worked that day. If we don't work that day, we get 4 hours automatically.
If schools are closed due to weather, we also get off.
If our Supervisor calls and says not to come in, we get Unplanned hours for the same amount under Unplanned. If we decided on our own not to go in, it's PTO for that amount of hours.
Linda talked about capping the mileage, and trying to cut down on expenses. Carpooling and other ways we can do that.
Rachel Camp talked about healthcare Confidentality. Thank you Rachel!
Today we could choose a headband or a daily planner. We had a great Turkey meal from Family Inn. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Before we came home, we were handed a blanket with a hat as well. Thank you Senior Companion Program for all you are and all you do for us. (Nov 12, 2025)
