Ear wax consists of dead skin cells, hair, and the secretions of glands in your outer ear canal. These microscopic glands in our skin open into hair follicles. They secrete oily/waxy matter, which lubricates the hair and skin of mammals.

“So what exactly do you do for a living?”

The beauty of audiology is that it is constantly evolving, and there is SO much variety in our field that not many people know about.

We are the primary healthcare professionals who: evaluate, diagnose, treat, and manage hearing loss and balance disorders in individuals of all ages. This means in one clinic day, we could see an infant hearing test in the morning and fit a 100-year-old with hearing aids in the afternoon. Talk about variety!

Audiologists are also trained to understand and program hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, bone-anchored hearing aids, and more. Audiologists can diagnose an individual with an auditory processing disorder or “hidden hearing loss."
