With food insecurity being so prevalent, we decided to host a food drive at our Five Corners office. We collected approximately 250 lbs of food and personal hygiene supplies for Aunt Dots Place food shelf in Essex Center, serving Essex, Jericho, Underhill, and Westford. Our business also donated $5,000 to the Vermont Food Bank, which received an additional $5000 in matching funds for an even wider area impact. We are proud to be part of this community.

If you’re seeing new or persistent fatigue, our care managers are here to help you explore what might be going on and find the right level of support.

Congratulations to November's Caregiver of the Month... Sharen!

Sharen has been with Home Care Assistance for almost 3 years. She came to us with a background in private caregiving and had recently achieved her Nursing Assistant Certification. Sharen has worked primarily as a live-in caregiver with our agency. She stands out this month for many reasons. Sharen is very thorough, kind, thoughtful, engaging, and intuitive. Her skill set is vast, as is her passion for her work.

Most recently, Sharen's client experienced a period where she did not feel well. After a couple of days of an upset stomach, she was weak and had difficulty taking in food. Sharen was concerned, so she intermittently took her temperature throughout the day. Around 8:30pm, the client spiked a fever exceeding 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Sharen immediately called our on-call line for assistance. Given the client's advanced age, multiple comorbidities (other diagnoses), and progressing symptoms, the decision was made to send her to the ER. After numerous tests, it was discovered that this client was septic.

This client was admitted to the hospital and treated with antibiotics, spending less than a week away from home. Had Sharen's intuition not kicked in and the client decided to treat only the fever, the outcome could have been catastrophic. Thank you, Sharen, for all you do each day to keep your client safe and well-cared-for.

Congratulations once again on being Caregiver of the Month!

***Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when an infection in one part of the body triggers an extreme inflammatory response throughout the body. It can start from common infections like pneumonia or a urinary tract infection, and without timely treatment, this overwhelming response can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Sepsis is not an infection itself but is the body's extreme reaction to one.

Staying healthy and independent starts with a little prevention. As we age, our immune systems need extra support to fight off illnesses like the flu, pneumonia, and shingles — and that’s where vaccinations make all the difference.

Keeping up to date on recommended vaccines not only helps older adults avoid serious illness but also protects families and caregivers, too. It’s one of the simplest ways to stay strong, active, and confident through every season. 🌿

At Home Care Assistance of Burlington, we help make wellness a priority — from reminding clients about upcoming appointments to offering support that keeps daily life running smoothly.

Because good health is the foundation for living well at home. ❤️

Even when you’re feeling well, regular checkups are one of the best ways to protect your health as you age.

These visits give your doctor the chance to catch early signs of illness, review medications, update vaccinations, and support your overall well-being — long before minor issues become something more serious.

Think of it as your yearly tune-up for both body and mind. Preventive care not only helps you stay healthy, but it can also save time, money, and worry down the road.

Our Care Managers can help you stay organized and supported every step of the way — because good health starts with good care. 🫶

As cooler weather approaches, so does respiratory season — a time when colds, flu, and other illnesses tend to make their rounds. For older adults, protecting respiratory health is an important part of staying strong and independent through the winter months. 🍂

A few small habits can go a long way: wash your hands often, stay hydrated, keep up with vaccinations, and avoid smoke or heavy allergens when possible. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables and staying active (as your doctor recommends) also help keep your immune system in top shape.

If you or a loved one need extra support managing a chronic condition or simply staying well this season, our Care Managers at Home Care Assistance can help you find the right resources and plan for care.

Reach out anytime — we’re here to help you breathe a little easier.
