A LIFE-SAVING CONVERSATION: November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
LUNG HEALTH MATTERS: Lung cancer is a disease that affects too many families, as it remains the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the United States, claiming more lives than breast, prostate, and colon cancers combined. This November, during Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Oregon Imaging Centers is dedicated to shedding light on this critical issue and empowering our community with knowledge about early detection.
The Power of Early Detection: Low-Dose CT (LDCT) Screening
The most powerful tool we have in the fight against lung cancer is early detection. Low-dose CT (LDCT) screening is a quick, non-invasive imaging exam proven to significantly reduce the risk of dying from lung cancer in high-risk patients. When lung cancer is found in its earliest stage, the survival rate is much higher—sometimes even curable!
Do you qualify for an LDCT screening? Talk to your primary care provider about whether LDCT screening is right for you, especially if you meet the following general guidelines:
You are between the ages of 50 and 80.
You have a 20-pack-year smoking history (e.g., one pack a day for 20 years, or two packs a day for 10 years).
You currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years.
OIC provides fast, clear results right here in Eugene, ensuring that if an abnormality is found, you and your doctor can take immediate action.
More Than Just Smoking: Know Your Risk Factors
While smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, about 10-20% of cases occur in people who have never smoked. Other significant risk factors include:
Radon exposure: An odorless, invisible gas found in some homes—it is the leading cause in non-smokers.
Secondhand smoke exposure.
Occupational exposures: Chemicals like asbestos, arsenic, or diesel exhaust.
A personal or family history of lung cancer.
This November, take a moment to discuss your personal risk factors and your screening eligibility with your primary care provider. The life you save could be your own.
