On this day,
in 1938
my grandmother gave birth to her second living child.

She named him Gary Brooks.
She was a woman of great strength.
She had reasons for her actions.
But rarely did she share them.

That boy became an adult.
He also had reasons for his actions.
But he always shared them.
Like he shared so much with me.
His first born.

I had a daughter.
And shared his name with her.
She is a woman of great strength.

I'm so proud of them all.
For facing the challenges of this life.
And for sharing their truth, their laughter, their love.

In this life there is pain and there is joy.
And there are always beautiful moments.

Last week I sat in a library.
At an old, sturdy table.
My fingers pressing and moving across the beautiful patterns, rings, grain.

My relationship with trees
and wood is complicated.

I want to appreciate the sacrifice of their lives,
but sometimes I just feel the pain.

So I honour both.
The life.
The death.
And the gifts they leave us with.

This photograph was in our study room,
where we sat and listened to
help our navigations.

The solitary reverence of this building pulls emotion from my heart.

It's made of wood.
It was constructed for worship.
My adoration is for the trees.
Their sacrifice.
Their lives.
Their gifts.

Nothing is permanent.
All is precious.
