💗"Lovingkindness is an expression of the heart unencumbered by fear" - Jack Kornfield

Lovingkindness is the practice of wishing for happiness and well-being for oneself and others. Fostering friendliness towards others is an ancient spiritual strategy that goes back at least 2000 years where it appears in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as Maitri, and in Buddhism's Brahmaviharas as Metta.

For the practitioner of lovingkindness, friendliness towards oneself and others is felt regardless of circumstance. This isn't easy, especially when faced, directly or indirectly, with anger, injustice or violence. When we feel threatened, it seems almost impossible for our brains not to react out of fear. If we try to practice lovingkindness in these challenging moments, we may begin to see these as opportunities to shift our cycle of fear and help heal ourselves and others.

Mahatma Gandhi developed the concept of Satyagraha, non-violent resistance, in the face of British colonial oppression to show how spiritual practices can sustain non-violent political resistance and lead to effective outcomes. He outlined do's and don't of this practice, literally translated as "truth force", which includes not harboring anger or retaliating in any way.

Non-violence, Ahimsa, isn't non-action, but rather a fundamental embrace of the inescapable truth that violence only begets more violence. If our actions, whatever they are, begin from a place of fear or anger, they will only result in further suffering for ourselves and others.

So, let lovingkindness permeate your mind, so that it can be felt by others through your presence, as well as, through the power of your words and actions as a source of peace in this world.

🧘‍♂️ Curious about Ashtanga yoga but not sure where to start?

Ashtanga is a traditional, breath-led vinyasa practice built on structure, repetition, and focus. When taught with intelligent modification, it becomes an accessible and sustainable way to build strength, coordination, and clarity over time.

We just published a new blog breaking down what Ashtanga yoga is, its history, and what “made accessible” really means. If you’ve ever been curious about Ashtanga, this is a great place to start.

👉 Read the blog:
https://eugeneyoga.us/ashtanga-made-accessible-eugene

You can also experience the practice in person with our weekly class:

Ashtanga Made Accessible
📅 Sundays 9:00–10:15 AM
📍 5th Street Market Studio

Friday, January 30th has been designated as a national day of pause and protest.

At Eugene Yoga, we are staying open to invite connection and support inner peace.

This is not about ignoring what’s happening in the world. It’s about recognizing that Ahmisa, non-violence, is cultivated through consistent practice. Mindful movement steadies the nervous system. And community keeps us grounded when life feels uncertain.

Let your practice be a refuge, a place to breathe, feel, release, and remember your center.

We’ll be here. Same schedule. Same doors open. Come as you are.

Everyone walks through the door carrying something different.

One mat might belong to someone feeling anxious about a new job.
Another to someone working through chronic pain.
Another to someone quietly grieving a loved one.
Another to someone dreaming of becoming a yoga instructor.

Same room. Same practice. Very different reasons for showing up.

Yoga is not about having it all together. It’s about meeting yourself exactly where you are and choosing to show up anyway. That choice matters. Every time.

Come as you are. Your reason is enough. 🧘‍♀️🪷

🌿 Stress doesn’t always feel dramatic.
Often, it shows up as shallow breathing, tight shoulders, restless sleep, or feeling constantly “on.” Over time, these patterns can quietly shape how we move through our days.

Yoga offers a way to work with stress rather than pushing through it. Through breath, gentle movement, and mindful awareness, the nervous system can begin to regulate, creating more calm, clarity, and resilience.

We just published a new blog exploring how yoga supports stress relief and emotional resilience, and what it really means to cultivate calm in everyday life.

👉 Read the full blog here:

If you’d like to experience these practices in person, join us for this upcoming workshop:

🧩 Yoga Crossword Challenge 🧘‍♀️

Time to put your yoga brain to work. This one is equal parts movement knowledge and mindful recall. The first graphic is the empty puzzle. Take a breath. Give it a try.

Swipe to the second slide for the solution and see how you did. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or just starting out, this is a fun way to reconnect with the language and philosophy behind the practice we return to again and again.

Pro tip: If a word doesn’t come to you right away, pause and notice that. Yoga shows up off the mat too.
