💕 Happy Valentine’s Day from Cascade Manor! Love is in the air, and residents were invited to share their love stories — from first crushes and teenage memories to the moments that stayed with them long after the years passed.
Meet Stephanie Sarnoff and her story, "The Jade Heart." A memory from her freshman year of high school — a time of ponytails, angora sweaters, and crew cuts — and a shy boy named Gary who quietly carried a crush.
“I was just 13 and a freshman when Gary, a boy who always seemed to find me, followed me through the hallways because he liked me. I never encouraged him and tried to keep my distance, but on my 14th birthday he cornered me, mumbled ‘Happy Birthday,’ and handed me a small box before disappearing. Inside, nestled in tissue, was a beautifully carved, polished dark green jade heart necklace. I didn’t know what to do — if I kept it, would it encourage him? If I returned it, would it hurt him? I kept the heart. Gary never gained any headway with me, but looking back I see what I never knew then — that his own true heart was the real jewel. What became of Gary is lost in the sands of time, but I still remember that once there was a boy of 14 who loved a girl who didn’t love him back… and I know this is true because I still have the jade heart to prove it.” 💚
