This is the Main Hall and Kannon Hall (an altar to the bodhissatva of compassion, Kannon) of Daifukuji (“Great Happiness”) Temple in Kona, Hawaii. It’s a Soto Zen temple that was founded in 1914 on the Big Island.

The founder, Kaiseki Kodama, walked around the entire island twice in order to collect the donations needed to build the temple. Once a hub of the Japanese immigrant community, the temple is now very multicultural and multiethnic. The current minister is Jiko Nakade. She’s the 12th teacher in the Daifukuji lineage. It sits up on a hill and is often enveloped in sun or warm rain and mist.

"Chudo" or "Middle Way" brushed by Zen master Shinzan about 10-15 years ago. Zen practice is a proponent of the middle path. The Buddha expressed this by leaving the over indulgent life of the palace and also not getting stuck in practices of extreme fasting and hurting his body.

The middle path can mean many things, but one very clear perspective is to prioritize the vehicle of your body as the platform for waking up. When the body is seen as important and embraced with kindness, movement work (zen yoga), and energy practices (naikan) you can be strong and grounded in our life and your meditation practice can naturally and discernibly bear fruit. We're also then in a beautiful place to support others in the world.

We had a wonderful Breakthrough to Zen Retreat last weekend. Daizan Roshi came out to lead it from Zenways. We were on the McKenzie River, beautiful nights and sunny warm days. Very inspirational!

Our spring meditation day was this past weekend out at Big Bear. The apple blossoms were full and everything felt so alive! Thank you to everyone who came. Wonderful day of meditation and zen yoga practice.

Our summer retreat this year is called "There Be Dragons". Dragons show up in the Zen tradition in many ways. Great meditators and bodhissatvas are sometimes depicted as riding them; dragons are viewed as the keepers of wisdom; carp transform into dragons; there are koans about dragons. Also, the inherent powerful dragon energy within can challenge you greatly and result in an integration of your whole being. During this retreat we'll focus on how dragons show up in so many ways and how to connect with them.

Dates: 3 or 5 days. Longer version: Friday, July 25 (dinner) – Wednesday, July 30, 2025 (lunch). Shorter version: Friday evening - Sunday afternoon. Led by Shinkai Roshi.
