The family of Bruce Willis shared that Bruce has aphasia and that is “now impacting his cognitive abilities”

Yikes! Speech-Language Pathologists and people with Aphasia will emphatically remind you that is just not the case.

Aphasia affects language, not speech or cognition. A stroke or brain injury could also impact other areas of the brain, but if it just aphasia, then only language changes.

Bruce will likely be working with a SLP on his understanding and use of language. We should send good vibes over to all the people who are working on their communication after an accident like this, it takes a lot of work, patience, and often a need to adjust to a new normal.

We are thrilled to introduce Sabreen NoorAli as a therapist at Eugene Speech Therapy. She is pursuing her doctorate at the University of Oregon and has extensive experience working with children and adults, including serving as clinical supervisor and Ziauddin University faculty for in-patient and outpatient clinics. Sabreen has been working as an SLP in Pakistan since 2017 and is currently in the process of obtaining her American Speech, Language, Hearing Association CCCs. PWPD have a degenerative disease, but our therapy can improve and maintain functioning for much longer than not having therapy.

LSVT and SPEAK OUT! are great examples of this.

We also want to check in on all of the speech therapy domains with these clients: speech, voice, swallowing, cognition. Most PWPD end up struggling in all of these areas with time.

PD is a lifelong disease, so we are with our clients all of their life. If you haven’t seen your PD client in 6+ months, reach out and get them in for a follow-up.
